A Note from the Principal:

Thank you.

Those two words never seem to convey the appreciation that I have for all of the parent and community support we have at Skinner.  Everyone is working relentlessly to make our neighborhood school the strongest in the city, and this includes the families and community.  Thank you to every Skinner Family for your tremendous support this school year. From sending your child to school in appropriate dress code, sending him/her to school every day, attending school events, and/or volunteering time and resources to the school, it truly does take a village to make everything work!

We have many events in the next couple of weeks and look forward to seeing you at our arts nights, awards ceremonies, and/or field day.  The end of the school year is busy, but just as I say to the students each morning, make every minute count!  We’ll make every minute count through June 3rd.

Celebrations

Congrats and Felicitaciones to our Scholars at CU yesterday, May 12, for Spanish Heritage & Culture Day. Our students won several prices! 3rd Place Commercial (Francisco Alvarado, Alondra Gil, Alissa Jaquez, Brianna Chapa), 3rd place Comida (Gisselle Sanchez, Mia Gonzalez), 3rd place Drawing (Diego Fierro), 1st place poetry (Diego Fierro), 2nd place Play (Misis Bautista, Joseph Barragan, Luis Andazola) and 3rd place Writing (Ashley Gurrola).

The University of Colorado's School of Education's BUENO Center for Multicultural Education, CU-Boulder's Office of Diversity, Equity and Community Engagement (ODECE), and Denver Public Schools collaborate to host Spanish Heritage Language and Culture Day. Across the CU-Boulder campus, 750 middle and high school students paid tribute to their linguistic and cultural roots through poetry readings, soccer games, dance demonstrations, singing competitions and more.

Congratulations to PTO President and CSC member, Skinner parent Nicole Kazenske.  Ms. Kazenske won the Denver Teachers' Awards Helen Phelps Volunteer Award at the Excellence in Education Banquet last night, May 12.  Nicole was nominated for the award by Ms. Koyama and Brown International's principal, Lynn Heintzman. Congrats Ms. Kazenske on your well deserved win of this prestigious award!

Meet Ms. Linsday Young - Skinner's New 16-17 Assistant Principal

Hello! I am excited about the opportunity to work with and be a part of the Skinner Family.  I am ready to become a Scorpion and support the staff, students, families and community members that make Skinner such an incredible place to be.  I had the opportunity to meet some of the incoming 6th graders and their families during the recent Pizza and Pool Party, and look forward to meeting more of you at registration on May 21st.

A little bit about me before we get to meet in person…I grew up in Texas, but moved to Denver in 2008, and it such a wonderful place my husband and I will never leave. I have been in DPS since 2009 and have worked in both middle and high school settings as a teacher, teacher leader, and a teacher effectiveness coach.  When I am not at work I enjoy playing soccer and volleyball out in the sunshine and traveling to experience new cultures.  I’m looking forward to meeting more of my new Skinner family!
