April Pop-Up Arts...

Hi everyone. Here is my skip-April-and-straight-to-May newsletter to let you know about a few good things around town.  Head-On Photo Festival is well underway, the Sydney Writers' Festival is about to kick off next week and then another of my favourite Festivals is Vivid which gets going by the end of the month.  I am loving the extended warm autumn and managed to get some veges planted out in my newly built raised garden bed.  Not sure there will be baskets of produce at the end of it all, but so far so good.  Have a good arty month and be sure to get out of town if you can - a break from the city is always a nice thing.  So until June...  Cassie

ROZELLE, SYDNEY...
Andjana Pachkova. Disintegration Anxiety
Until 20 May 2016

Landscapes painted from around the artist's home and many little bays of the northshore, others from the western plains of NSW, between Bathurst and Dubbo and others imagined Australian landscapes and contours.  The Australian landscape seen through the eyes of this Ukrainian-Russian-American artist are beautiful - rich in colour, texture, movement and life.  A most delightful gallery space in Rozelle.  Link to Brag Magazine article

Dutch Masters of Light.
A photographic exhibition by Erwin Olaf & Hendrik Kerstens.
Until 29 May

This exhibition brings to life the famous Dutch light through contemporary portraits and landscapes. Inspired by the great Renaissance tradition of manipulating light and shade, Dutch Masters of Light reinterprets the style of celebrated Dutch artists including Rembrandt and Johannes Vermeer in a striking series of portraits by contemporary photographers, Hendrik Kerstens and Erwin Olaf. The extraordinary luminous quality of Dutch light is also explored in Hollands licht, a film by Pieter-Rim de Kroon and Maarten de Kroon.  This exhibition is part of a series of events which mark the 400th anniversary of the first Dutch contact with Western Australia. when on 25 October 1616, Dirk Hartog made landfall with his ship the Eendracht at Dirk Hartog Island, in the Shark Bay area. (Text from Customs House website).  Free.
Also catch the other three Head On shows also showing throughout Customs House Library.

LANDSCAPE & DREAMING...
Cabin Porn

Yes the name is catchy, but the site is my new favourite.  It's a book (I have it and love it), a website, Instagram and a place for dreaming for sure. I want to go and stay in all of them. Build one of my own.  Check it out...

What's surprised me about the book is how moving it is.  It's sweet to look at beautiful photos of woodsy cabins; it's calming and the pictures are lovely. But the stories about the work behind the cabins - that's the magic.

SECRET LITTLE GALLERIES TO DISCOVER...
Hurstville Museum & Gallery + Library...
Current exhibition, EMPORIUM closes Sunday 15 May

The little gallery and historical collection in a historic building is worth a little weekend detour.  There are changing exhibitions like this one - I loved it - and more permanent historical exhibitions with a local angle. Let me know about more museums like this one please.  This current exhibition is small but gorgeous.

Japanese inspired gardens in autumn

SECRET GARDENS TO DISCOVER...
Auburn Botanic Gardens + Gallery
29 May Colours of Autumn Festival

These beautiful gardens are like a little secret of the western suburbs.  And now the colours are ramping up it's a lovely time to visit.  The Japanese inspired gardens are very pretty - not 100% authentic but their history and story is very interesting - planned and inspired around a collection of Japanese postcards from the 1960s.  The Peacock Gallery is worth a visit too and their current exhibition, OPEN FIELD, connects back to this history and local artists with a strong connection to this area.  The two big annual Festivals are the Autumn Colours (May) and Cherry Blossom (Aug). But if you want a quieter experience, than head to the gardens on another day.

Eating this month inSurry Hills, Sydney...
FAVOURITE THAI RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH...
MUUM MAAM
I love this restaurant tucked down in Holt Street, with one of my fave wine bars just around the corner, 121BC.  One of the many interesting little foodie nooks of Surry Hills.  The right spiciness, flavours, presentation, service, atmosphere, lighting - what's not to like. And then the desserts... Up there with the best Thai restaurants in town. And not expensive. Good wine list.
