Higher Education Programs at NYU Steinhardt

Congratulations Class of 2016!

This May, 32 Masters and 8 Doctoral graduates earned their degrees. The doctoral convocation honored alumna Monica Rae Martinez MA ’91, PhD ’04, senior fellow to the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, a presidential appointee to the White House Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics, and the co-author of the book, Deeper Learning (The New Press, 2014). Her career encompasses major programmatic, management, and executive leadership roles and is marked both by her vast knowledge of secondary reform and college readiness and hands-on experience managing and supporting major foundation initiatives. She shares her own educational journey as a Latina in Higher Education in her talk at TEDxWashingtonHeights

Alumnae Together in Stern Leadership Team

Dr. Paula Steisel Goldfarb, Ed. D, is the Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs, Graduate Financial Aid, and Admissions at Stern, and also teaches in our program. Paula is alumna, professional staff, and faculty of NYU, and each identity helps her succeed in the others: "as a professor, I can fully relate to and recall the tremendous effort and sacrifice made by my students to attend school at night after a full day at work or a full day at an internship.  And, without a doubt, working so closely with students, whether in or out of the classroom, has made me a better dean."

Marie-Rose Nduku, M.A. '11 is a longtime Violet, from her arrival as an undergraduate student to her current position as Director of Academic Advising and Graduate Financial Aid at Stern. Marie-Rose originally came to NYU for "the opportunity to earn a business degree and subsequently join the many Wall Street bound undergraduate Sternies. However in the process, it became clear to me that my calling was Student Services, I proceeded to earn a Master degree in Higher Education and never looked back." Her son now attends NYU, as well.

Farewell, Professor Matt Mayhew!

Dr. Mayhew has accepted a position as the William Ray and Marie Adamson Flesher Professor of Educational Administration at The Ohio State University. This endowed chair will be an important next step in Mayhew's already-impressive career. "Matt Mayhew began his tenure at NYU as a junior assistant professor and has grown to become one of the most important higher education researchers in the country. He is a masterful teacher and doctoral adviser, and his contributions to our program have been extraordinary," says Dr. Ann Marcus.

Arianna Deans honored with President's Service Award

Second-year master's student Arianna Deans is a recipient of this year's President's Service Award at NYU. Since arriving at NYU from Valdosta State, she has been working on campus as a Resident Life Assistant in Residential Life and Housing Services where she supported student leaders and the resident hall council. In the fall, she co-taught a section of Steinhardt's international graduate student orientation. Arianna served as Vice President in the Steinhardt Graduate Service Organization this year, and was recently published in NYU's Journal of Student Affairs. Her positivity, commitment to students, and enthusiasm for professional development is extraordinary and deserving of this recognition.

Journal of Student Affairs Author, Dan Erosa

Dan Erosa, MA '16 graduated this month, and had his first article published in NYU's Journal of Student Affairs (JoSA). Dan lives and works in Hoboken, New Jersey where he is a Resident Director and Office of Graduate Student Affairs Coordinator at Stevens Institute of Technology. For the last year he has also worked as a Graduate Assistant for NYU's Office of Community Standards and Compliance. His first year in the program, he served as Accommodations Chair for Recruitment Days, and he has been known to host may socials for members of the Association of Student Affairs Professionals (ASAP). He volunteered as an ACPA Ambassador and attended the conference in Montreal this year, after presenting his own navigating campus activism at the Student Affairs Conference at NYU in February. His article for JoSA is titled How Bullying and Campus Climate Affect Queer Students of Color

Journal of Student Affairs: Volume XII, 2016

The NYU's Association of Student Affairs Professionals, led by Higher Education M.A. students, arranged a multi-institution student mixer this past April. NYU students networked with peers from Higher Ed graduate programs at Baruch, Columbia, and Stony Brook.

A New Academic Year, A New Editor

As I prepare to leave New York University to head back home to Oregon, I leave In the Loop in very capable new hands. Samantha Harvey will be a second-year M.A. student. She has a BFA from Pratt Institute and currently works in their Center for Career and Professional Development. She is excited to build connections among our NYU community as the new Editor. Her enthusiasm and experience in graphic design will be great assets for the newsletter moving forward. I am grateful for all of those who helped make this newsletter a reality. I look forward to finding future issues in my inbox, so that even from the West coast, I can stay In the Loop. -- Ariel Bloomer
From faculty adviser, Prof. Ann Marcus: "This academic year saw the launch of In the Loop!  We are indebted to Ariel for her expertise, creativity and determination to create and improve our newsletter. So I extend deep thanks for Ariel, as I welcome Samantha who brings impressive qualifications and energy to the newsletter.  Please send us your feedback and ideas for stories."
