Healthy Families Lower Hutt Update
17 May 2016

Kia ora koutou

Healthy Families Lower Hutt are hosting Dr Tom Mulholland from 24-28 May 2016, and we’d like to invite you to attend some of his sessions.

Who is Dr Tom?

Dr Tom is an Emergency Department Doctor and GP with over 25 years’ experience in New Zealand. He’s also a bestselling author, TV and radio show host, international key note speaker, and a local boy raised in Stokes Valley.

The Dr Tom team are currently touring the country in a retro Chevy V8 ambulance performing pre-diabetes and heart checks in many of the Healthy Families NZ locations, and aiming to be the ‘ambulance at the top of the cliff’.

NZ Doctor recently ran this fantastic blog post on Facebook by Nurse Barbara Docherty about her experience working with Dr Tom doing community health checks. It’s a great read, and a real eye-opener.

Although our approaches differ, our aim is the same. We both want to turn the tide on obesity and preventable diseases in New Zealand – as we’re sure many of you do too.

We believe this is a great opportunity to spark community engagement and awareness of just how preventable these diseases are, and we would really appreciate your support and involvement.

What’s on?

Dr Tom will be running two community talks on healthy thinking and living.

Community talk in Taita
The first will be at the Walter Nash Centre in Taita from 6-7.30pm on Wednesday 25 May 2016.

Community talk in Wainuiomata
The second Dr Tom talk on healthy thinking and living will take place at the Wainuiomata Community Hall from 2.30-4pm on Thursday 26 May 2016.

These events are open to the public, and are completely free. No RSVP is necessary.

We would appreciate it if you could please promote these community talks to your staff/stakeholders/customers through this poster on noticeboards, your staff intranet or social media (we have a post that you could ‘share’ on Facebook).

Business breakfast
You’re also welcome to attend the Hutt Valley Workplace Wellbeing Special Interest Group business breakfast with Dr Tom on Tuesday 24 May (7.30-9am) at Pelorus Trust Sports House, Seaview.

There is a $25 cost for this event. All the details, including how to register, are on the HRINZ website. Spaces are limited for this event.

Community testing
One of the most exciting parts of Dr Tom’s visit will be the community testing he is going to be doing.

Dr Tom and his team will be performing a total of 100 pre-diabetes and heart checks over the course of the week in Stokes Valley, Wainuiomata, Taita and Petone.

These health checks will be totally spontaneous. The Dr Tom team will be based in community hubs, and will approach Lower Hutt residents as they go about their day.

The aim is to reach people who would otherwise not have gone to their doctors to get these tests done.

The team will also be working closely with Te Awakairangi Health Network.

We hope to see you at one of the community talks, or the business breakfast.

Ngā mihi
