PTA President Notes

May 15, 2016

Hey Presidents...

This Thursday is our Superintendent Coffee (topic still TBA).

Please push out information about the Spring Dessert training on Monday the 23rd; this is an opportunity for your boards to network and socialize as well as learn some things. This training will count for your officers for next year. As soon as possible, please let me know how many people you think you'll be sending to each class so that I can have the appropriate number of handouts.

Spring Dessert Training Details

Monday, May 23, 6-8ish

The evening will begin right at 6 with a short bit of business in the Alumni Room. While we're all together, we'll run a Roles & Responsibilities class, which is great for veterans and newbies alike.

After that, we'll break out into the following classes:
Money Matters (good for EVERYONE)
Fundraising Class/Roundtable
Membership Class/Roundtable
Programs Class/Roundtable

Please let your entire roster know about these classes and encourage everyone to attend. Nonprofit training is a perk of PTA and can be useful to you in the future!!

Dessert will be served.

Convention

Convention is this coming weekend, and we only have 2 Shoreline PTAs attending. When you have a minute, could you please email me about why your PTA is not attending? The State would like to know the real reasons for low registration this year.  Be honest.

When You Have Next Year's Officers

Email your roster to shorelineptapres@gmail.com.
Kim will be taking over the email at the end of June, so there will be continuity. As a reminder, we need names, positions, and email contact information - this will go into our records and also on the online directory so that you can network with each other.

Enter your officers into PT-Avenue.
For instructions, check out the instructions here.

PTA/COUNCIL BOARD OF DIRECTORS TO-DO LIST FOR MAY
  • Work with treasurer to set June deadlines for reimbursements and notify volunteers and school staff.
  • Plan a transition meeting for outgoing and incoming board members in June.
  • Recruit 3-4 members to conduct an end-of-year financial review after June 30 (board should approve members).
  • Work with incoming and outgoing board members to fill non-elected board and chair positions.
  • Last membership meeting: approve budget, approve any changes in standing rules. Review the yearly goals and objectives set for September
  • Charitable solicitations*
*For PTAs that will be completing the Charitable Registration Renewal (if your PTA's total income is $50,000+) and the Charitable Optional Registration form (if your PTA's total income is under $50,000), please report their PTA's physical street address on the charities program forms. The Secretary of State's office will happily accept "care of" Washington State PTA as the mailing address; however, the street address reported to the Secretary of State should reflect the PTA's actual physical location (e.g. the school's address). Deadline to submit is May 31.

Annual Corporation Renewal
If your PTA incorporated in May, it is required to complete the renewal by the end of the month.  Click File Online for Non-Profit Corporations.

Note: Online annual report filing for profit corporations and LLCs will be unavailable from May 25 to June 5. Be sure to file your annual report before that time! Read here

Education Funding Discussion
WHEN
Wednesday, June 1, 2016 from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM (PDT)
WHERE
Pacific Tower - 1200 12th Avenue South Panoramic Center, Seattle, WA 98144

The Seattle Times Education Lab invites you to an in-depth discussion about school funding in Washington state that will feature a facilitated discussion to help you understand the range of perspectives on the issues, and a chance to share your own views.

We'll begin checking in guests at 5:30 p.m. The event will begin promptly at 6 p.m.

In the first part of the event, a professional facilitator will lead a conversation with selected education advocates and policymakers who are deeply immersed in the debate. The goal is to foster greater understanding rather than rancor.

Then everyone will have a chance to talk with each other -- and as a group -- about what stood out to them.

We’re excited to experiment with this format because we think it will provide more insight and information than a standard panel discussion or debate. Our hope is that the conversation provides perspectives that legislators will consider as they decide how to fulfill the Supreme Court’s McCleary decision.

Here are the people who will take part in the facilitated discussion:

  • Mary Fertakis, Tukwila School District board member

  • Liv Finne, director of the Center for Education at Washington Policy Center

  • Eden Mack, board member of Washington’s Paramount Duty

  • Rep. Chad Magendanz (R- Issaquah), member of the state Legislature's Education Funding Task Force

  • Jim McIntire, Washington state treasurer

  • Kelly Munn, state field director for the League of Education Voters

  • Sharonne Navas, co-founder and executive director of the Equity in Education Coalition

  • Stephen Nielsen, deputy superintendent, Seattle Public Schools

  • Sen. Christine Rolfes (D-Bainbridge Island), member of the state Legislature's Education Funding Task Force

  • Lyon Terry, Seattle Public Schools teacher and the 2015 Washington State Teacher of the Year

Space is limited so reserve your ticket early! If tickets are sold out, you can put yourself on the waitlist and more tickets may become available.
