Why Hello there! Terrific and Terrifying pretty much sums up my month! I also wanted to share some upcoming opportunities to get hands on with lettering and letterpress before we dive into the typographic treasure for May!

Terrific.

Thank you all so much! Feedback for TypographJournal volume 04 has been super positive and I am overwhelmed by the encouragement and support I am receiving for these documents. I also really appreciate those of you generously sharing #typographjournal on social media! It is wonderful to see copies arriving and being enjoyed all around the world.

Terrified.

Next week I will be taking the stage alongside Jess Hische, Timba Smits, Jonathan Calugi, For the People, Paul Garbett, D*Face and loads more inspirtional creatives at the Design Conference. I am going to talk about my approach to balancing professional and passionate practice - specifically, how my love of learning (and of failing) build my creative confidence and how play informs my process as a designer. I am a really nervous public speaker but am honored to be included in this line-up. It is going to be an epic 3 days! I would love to see you there and less than 50 tickets remain so secure your seat soon if you haven't already!

Letterpress (&Typesetting).

In conjunction with The Design Conference, Work-Shop and the Design College of Australia I am going to be delivering a half day letterpress and typesetting workshop next week! In this hands-on session, participants will gain an overview of the history of handset type and letterpress printing before undertaking a brief which calls for both conventional and experimental approaches to typesetting. Each participant will design and print their own A4 artwork in response to the brief. The price includes lunch and a glass of wine (always a winning combo)! Check out the details and book here

Pairing typefaces is a lot easier if you understand the principles and classifications of type and typography. Tim Browns 'Combining typefaces' is an excellent resource and is available for free downlpad via Typekit.

Rialto is a monoline script - typeface inspired by neon signs in Poland - designed by Zuzanna Rogatty availale from The Designers Foundry. I purchased a license for Rialto earlier this month and haven't stopped playing with it since! Its fluid monolinear forms contrast with the sharp and precise terminals which give the face inspired by vintage letterforms a more contemporary feel than many mono display scripts on the market today.

Typography is far more than type design and layout. With the complexity of today's technology the designer must understand typography as a system.

Brilliant interview with Nina Stössinger which details Nina's passion for type & approach to learning (and improving!) her craft.

Canela is a graceful display typeface that defies many of the traditional classifications. Designed by Miguel Reyes, its forms are in an ambiguous space between sans and serif, both soft and sharp, modern yet with roots in the classical. Canela began as an interpretation of Caslon, but Reyes gradually took the family in a new and unexpected direction, shedding its serifs and leaving only vestigial flaring at the ends of strokes, taking on a monumental quality influenced by his experience with stone carving.
