Students celebrate Scholars' programme graduation

Nine students from The Boswells School, Chelmsford, celebrated their graduation from the Scholars' Programme run by the Brilliant Club at Caius College, University of Cambridge, on Thursday.

George Fisk, Tommy Dixon-Hodge, Emily Forster, Jasmine Marshall, Ada Ananti, Anastasia Rose, Lewis Vaughan, Charisma Lee and Clarissa Kaihiva toured the College and Cambridge, had lunch in the great hall and listened to talks encouraging them to aim high in their studies before receiving certificates marking their completion of a university-style academic programme.

Under the Brilliant Club scheme, PhD tutors deliver tutorials to small groups of academically-able pupils, from Year 6 through to Year 12, aiming to develop the knowledge, skills and ambition that help those pupils to secure places at highly-selective universities.

The Boswells students worked with PhD student Jessica Claridge, from Royal Holloway, University of London, to explore the topic 'Coding and ciphers - how to make an unbreakable code'.

Jessica held a series of seminars at the school. The students completed online assessments and each created their own code.

Deputy Headteacher James Donaldson said he hoped the pupils would "reflect that the school is ambitious for them and that they should be ambitious for themselves".

He added: "If they now think of applying to university when they would not have considered it before that is a great success.

"We will make a big fuss of them and continue to encourage all of our students to reach for the stars.”
