Essay Contest Winners Describe What Their School Means to Them
The winners have been announced for the 2016 Michigan Charter Schools Essay Contest. The Center is excited to share that six of the essays recognized with awards are from CMU-authorized schools. We invite you to read the winning essays here.
Michigan’s Per-pupil Funding Equity Gap
Michigan’s charter school students, on average, receive less in per-pupil funding than their traditional public school peers. This gap in funding has only continued to widen in recent years. If you would like to read more of the Center’s analysis of Michigan’s funding equity gap, click here.
U.S. News and World Report Best High Schools List Released
Each year U.S. News and World Report releases their list of the best high schools throughout the nation. The Center would like to congratulate the four CMU-authorized high schools on this year’s list Central Academy, Charyl Stockwell Academy, The Midland Academy of Advanced and Creative Studies and West Michigan Academy of Environmental Science. Spirit of the Future Scholarships
Eligible graduates of CMU-authorized charter public high schools have the opportunity to apply for scholarships to attend CMU.  Read more
Charter School Educator Award
Eligible educators and school leaders at CMU-authorized charter public schools can receive 50 percent tuition assistance for eligible graduate programs at CMU.  Read more
College of Education and Human Services
Links direct you to specific Centers and Departments within the College that have resources that can drive performance, enhance capacity and create opportunities at all levels of the K-12 community.  Read more
GOOD NEWS IN OUR SCHOOLS
Head Start Teacher Receives National Recognition
International Academy of Flint’s GISD Head Start Teacher Killotta Tartt-Wall was one of three Head Start Teachers in the nation to be selected as a Teacher of the Year. She recently traveled to Washington, D.C. for an event honoring the teachers at the White House with President Obama.
Student’s Letter Prompts Flint Visit from President Obama
President Obama visited Flint recently to speak with residents regarding the water crisis. His visit was prompted by a letter from Amariyanna Copeny, a third grade student at Woodland Park Academy. She was able to meet President Obama and other dignitaries during the visit on May 4.  Read more
Walden Green Student Wins Breaking Barriers Contest
Kendal Young, a fifth grade student at Walden Green Montessori, was one of two winners nationally of the Breaking Barriers Essay Contest. This contest honors the life of baseball player Jackie Robinson and allows students to share their stories on how they overcome barriers using his values.  Read more
