Thoughts for the Future

Dear Members and Friends,

Firstly, I am very pleased to welcome our new Members. As older Members will confirm, the Society has come on in Leaps and Bounds in recent years. Some of it is down to the efforts of your Committee, but their efforts would be wasted if they did not have the support of you, the Members. However, the Committee does not have all the answers and this letter asks for your help in several fields (and Gardens).

There are some old favourites and some exciting new categories for the children to celebrate the Queen’s 90th Birthday. Do come along and support your Society. Don’t forget you can indulge yourself with a scrrrumptious! Cream Tea prepared by the WI.

This Show is advertised as a ‘Plant Sale and Flower Show'. Following the closure of Rosemary Nurseries we have been searching for a new supplier of plants. We have found someone we are going to try this year but we, obviously, have to pay for the plants, which reduces our profits. Can I remind you of the request in the Spring Newsletter to remember us when you are splitting your perennials or if you have any surplus seedlings. Please label them and bring them along on the day to be sold.

We are hoping to organize a more structured approach to this problem and would like to hear from any Member who will have the time and greenhouse space over winter to either grow from seed or from plug plants to provide a supply of plants for the June Show. The intention would be to form a group of likeminded growers who would meet September time to discuss and decide who would be growing what etc. You would not be alone and would have the support of fellow Members. (We could even have a category at the Show for best whatever.)

The second Appeal is to any Member who would be willing to help on the Committee. Speaking to you at various events I am aware we have a wealth of knowledge out there. We need new ideas and modern thinking if we are to survive. The main duties would entail attending a meeting for a couple of hours approximately once a month and helping out at the two Shows we have each year. And you would get a Polo shirt and Fleece in a fetching shade of green, to wear at the Shows.

If you feel you can help out with any of the above, or if you need further information please do not hesitate to contact Carolyn or Bob Bates, any Committee Member, or via our website: www.brhs.org.uk/contact
