ANNOUNCING OUR 2016-2017 SEASON!

Throughout next season, Dartmouth Players will continue to bring you “the magic of live theatre”.  2016/2017 will offer fresh experiences to our volunteer theatre-makers and audiences alike. We are looking forward to exploring new territory and delivering great entertainment: comedy, music, and drama, to you, our loyal patrons.

Love, Loss and What I Wore (Season Opener) - by Nora Ephron and Dehlia Ephron, directed by Joanne Arbuthnott, September 8 - 11

Winner - 2010 Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience

Winner - 2010 Broadway.com Audience Award for Favorite New Off-Broadway Play

Proving that a great show is always in fashion, Love, Loss, and What I Wore has become an international hit. This intimate collection of stories based on the best-seller by Ilene Beckerman, uses clothing and accessories and the memories they trigger to tell funny and often poignant stories that all women can relate to.

The Rocky Horror Show - book, music and lyrics by Richard O’Brien, Directed by Jolene Pattison, October 20th - November 5

Winner - 1973 Evening Standard Award for Best Musical

The Rocky Horror Show is the play that spawned the cult classic movie, and is based on the 25th anniversary Broadway Revival. Cross-dressing mad scientist, Dr. Frank N. Furter, and his band of weirdos will perform the Time Warp, sass the audience, and otherwise put on a show that you won't soon forget.

Don’t Tell Mother - by Monk Ferris, directed by Daniel Yule, January 19 - February 4

Cinnamon Schmidt’s life is turned upside down when she is the only witness to a bank robbery on the same day as her fiance is meeting her mother for the first time. When a federal agent, her fiance's mother and the bank robber all show up, nobody can keep their story straight in this hilarious farce full of adventure, romance, mistaken identity, and an out of control vacuum cleaner.

Elephant’s Graveyard - by George Brant, directed by Tamara Smith, March 30 - April 15

Winner - 2008 Keene Prize for Literature

Once upon a time in Tennessee.... There was a town... There was a circus... And there was an elephant. Ladies and Gentlemen, step right up. The circus is coming to town. This highly theatrical, award winning drama buzzes with truth about the consequences of misunderstanding.

Jake’s Women - by Neil Simon, directed by Ian MacDermid, June 8 - 24

Jake, a novelist who is more successful with fiction that with life, faces a marital crisis by daydreaming about the women in his life. The wildly comic and sometimes moving flashbacks played in his mind are interrupted by visitations from actual females.

The Dining Room by A.R. Gurney

Tamara Smith

A formal dining rooms is a special place, different than any other. Formal celebrations, grave discussions, flirtations, visitors, secrets, teenage indiscretions and many other occurrences happen within the unique atmosphere of a dining room. In A. R. Gurney’s “Dining Room”, six actors create eighteen unique situations and events that will bring back personal memories, make you laugh and maybe shed a tear.

"..... a thoughtful and superbly written comedy....." - Variety

"....often funny and rueful and, by the end, very moving." - The New York Times

Director's Notes

This production is the second time I have directed The Dining Room, the first being in 2003.  I was delighted to get this chance because I've always loved this play and it's fun to take a fresh look at something after such a long time. Mr. Gurney, the playwright, was intrigued by the behaviour of wealthy, “old money” people from the New England states and in this play at times he makes fun of them and at others, points out their foibles and challenges. You will see eighteen separate plays during this show and all of them take place in a dining room, often viewed as the most sacred room in any house. Dining rooms invoke images from the past, they make us recall special formal events and remind us of behavioural rules that are fast slipping into history. To say the dining room is a character in this play, not just background scenery, is probably true because its influence is felt in every scene.  The Dining Room is usually cast with three male and three female actors each playing multiple roles; however for our production we have six female actors performing all the roles. The cast and Stage Manager took on the all female cast challenge with gusto and I'm grateful to them for being so creative and accommodating.

Important Changes for Next Season

Our hard-working theatre volunteers strive constantly to deliver top quality entertainment while keeping ticket prices affordable. These are challenging times for live theatre, as we find ourselves competing for audiences against a wide range of easily available in-home entertainment. At the same time, our expenses continue to increase, forcing us to look for ways to economize while not comprising the quality of our shows. After studying our attendance numbers over the past two years, the Board of Directors realized that it would be possible to eliminate one evening per week from our show schedules and still accommodate everyone who wants to attend. Therefore beginning next season, we will not be offering shows on Wednesday evenings. Our shows will run from Thursday to Saturday for three weeks and we will continue to offer two Sunday matinees as before. By doing this, we will save money on performance rights, and our actors and other volunteers will enjoy longer interim rest periods during each run. We sincerely hope that this change will not inconvenience anyone and that you will all continue to come and enjoy the magic of live theatre at Dartmouth Players.

DP Goes to Sherbrooke

In beautiful, historic Sherbrooke Village this July 22nd to 24th, Dartmouth Players actors will perform a summer pantomime written by local journalist and playwright, Ryan Van Horne. Paul Bunion and the Salmon Forest uses music and laughter to entertain, and perhaps inform, spectators of all ages.

Ticket information will be posted on the Sherbrooke Village website, and on the Dartmouth Players site when available.

Paul Bunion arrives in Sherbrooke from an island off the coast of Maine called Big Toe. He's carrying nothing but an axe over his shoulder as he walks down Main Street with a sly eye, sizing up his chance to get rich quick. Bunion plans to exploit Sherbrooke’s wealth of resources - gold, salmon and timber - but the locals have learned from the Mi’kmaw and their hero, Glooscap, that greed causes only problems. Bunion has brought a different mentality, along with his crew of Bunion's Privateers, and it leads to a showdown in Sherbrooke.

Co-directed and co-produced by Ryan Van Horne and Mike Durling.
