New Adventures Honor Traditions
The NAYA Canoe Journey Family is about to launch into the Willamette River this summer and travel in the footsteps of local Native ancestors to Nisqually. The journey is a revitalization of local ancient cultural practice based on sharing, celebrating and guiding our community.
Three years ago NAYA Elders believed they could guide our urban Native community in a positive direction to honor our ancestors and make an impact on youth. They ambitiously took on the NAYA Canoe Journey Family program and organized to bring together community, resources, and funding to be a part of the 2016 Paddle to Nisqually.
The project has grown into a dynamic community effort that has multigenerational interest to learn and honor ancestors whose lifestyles relied on the river and lived in this region. This year on July 22 – August 7, after months of practice, learning new songs, and drumming, the NAYA Canoe Journey Family will paddle from the land of the Skokomish Nation and land in Nisqually. The journey features many traditions and protocols that have been incorporated in the learning and practice over the past three years.
With such a new and exciting undertaking, the dedication from bi-weekly practices on the Willamette River has helped develop teamwork, endurance and healthy living skills. Additionally, this year NAYA incorporated the Healing of the Canoe curriculum into the Early College Academy. Students can earn credit to participate and learn lifelong prevention techniques.
The NAYA Canoe Journey Family is excited about participating in the journey this year. Stay informed and learn more by visiting NAYA's blog, website page, or join their Facebook group.
