Change of School Database: The school has migrated its school database to a new provider. There will now be a period of time where staff will be operating both the old and new systems in parallel which may impact on service delivery. As a result, requests for information may take a little longer than normal and we hope you can bear with us as we try and keep disruption to a minimum. The new system is due to go live in school on June 13. We hope we can count on your support during this period of change and we can all look forward to a new system that will benefit our whole school community.
Managing stress during exams: Taking exams can be very stressful because of what is at stake. Pupils may feel the weight of expectation from family or school to succeed and that can lead to feelings of being afraid you are not good enough, or that you haven’t worked hard enough. School Counsellor Sarah O'Donnell (pictured right) said: "If stress levels are raised for too long it can be harmful both to you and your chances. Everybody’s stress ‘threshold’ is different however stress can work to your advantage because it can help you produce your peak performance, if it’s kept at manageable levels. Being organised and good planning can help reduce stress and there are also breathing and relaxation techniques that can be helpful."

Ashley White: Ashley was a student at West Hatch from 2003-2010. He was a member of the team that won four back-to-back District Basketball Championships and made it to the National Basketball Quarter-Finals. Ashley also represented the school in football, cricket and badminton. Alongside his sporting interests Ashley also worked extremely hard to achieve 11 A*-C GCSEs and three Bs at A-level. Ashley said: “On leaving West Hatch I went to the University of Hertfordshire to study Sport and Exercise Science. It was during my time at University that I had the opportunity to complete a Work Experience module back at West Hatch, working with the PE team. My passion for the school, the enthusiasm I have for sport and the way I was mentored by my colleagues motivated me to go into teaching.”
Ashley completed his teaching qualification at Middlesex University and has been working at JCoSS (the Jewish Community Secondary School) in Barnet for two years. It is here that Ashley became involved in a life-changing experience.
He said: "Whilst crossing the school site one day a student went into cardiac arrest and I was the first, First-Aider on the scene. I performed CPR and thankfully the student is doing really well. My immediate goal in life is now to ensure that there are defibrillators in all local schools along with the provision of appropriate training for staff and students.”
West Hatch has already begun planning a CPR module with Ashley to be delivered through its PSHE programme in the Autumn.
