Tembembe Ensamble Continuo

Thursday, October 13, 2016, 7:30pm, Aria

“Fandango Barocco” features Tembembe, a 5-member instrumental and vocal ensemble from Mexico. Bringing together the sound world of the Hispanic baroque guitar and the music of Mexican and Latin American contemporary culture, Tembembe explores the similarities between the instruments and practices of these two traditions. Expect a riveting performance including song and dance that brings alive the festive spirits of both the Hispanic fandango of the 17th century and contemporary traditional fandango.

Tim Fain: “Portals: A Multi-Media Exploration of Longing in the Digital Age”

This live concert/video hybrid presentation by violinist Tim Fain is his musical exploration of the human longing for connection in the digital age. Expect a combination of music, film and dance including a work for solo violin by Philip Glass (written for Fain), film choreographed and directed by Black Swan’s Benjamin Millepied, the music of Pulitzer Prize winning composers Aaron Jay Kernis, William Bolcom, and Kevin Puts, and the acclaimed Nico Muhly and Lev Zhurbin, all interwoven with films by Kate Hackett and spoken-word poetry by Leonard Cohen, read by radio personality Fred Child.

ten Thing

World-renowned Norwegian trumpeter, Tine Thing Helseth formed her ten-person (all female) brass ensemble in 2007 after she and some trumpet playing friends watched a string orchestra. They were inspired to recreate the same level of ensemble on brass instruments, playing great repertoire at the highest level possible. tenThing’s music are all original arrangements by Norwegian guitarist and arranger Jarle G. Storløkken. Their pieces (sometimes with choreography) span an eclectic range of repertoire from Grieg and Bizet to Piazzolla and Kurt Weill.

Roomful of Teeth

Roomful of Teeth is a Grammy-winning eight-person vocal project dedicated to mining the expressive potential of the human voice. They have studied Tuvan throat singing, yodeling, Hindustani music and other vocal techniques from around the world to shape their unique sound. The performance at Aria will include a world premiere of a new commission by experimental pop artist Nick Zammuto and the Minnesota premiere of group member Caroline Shaw’s Pulitzer Prize-winning composition, Partita for 8 Voices, “A highly polished and inventive a cappella work uniquely embracing speech, whispers, sighs, murmurs, wordless melodies and novel vocal effects” (New Amsterdam Records).

American pianist (and host of NPR’s From the Top) Christopher O’Riley will play J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations paired with Metamorphosis No. 2 by Philip Glass. Come early to enjoy interactive technology components.

For 134 years, The Schubert Club has invited the world’s finest recital soloists and ensembles to the Twin Cities and promoted the finest musical talents of our community through performances, education, and museum programs. It has secured a prominent and distinguished reputation among musical organizations nationwide, and is one of the first arts organizations in the country.

The Schubert Club's International Artist Series has presented virtually all of the world’s great recitalists including Jascha Heifetz, Arthur Rubinstein, Cecilia Bartoli, Beverly Sills, Leontyne Price, Yo-Yo Ma and Renée Fleming to name a few. In 2014, The Schubert Club introduced Schubert Club Mix, its convention-breaking performance series in nontraditional venues. Additional series include Music in the Park Series (chamber music concerts in the St. Anthony Park neighborhood), a free weekly lunchtime Courtroom Concerts series in downtown St. Paul, Accordo, and the Hill House Chamber Players.

The Schubert Club is committed to music education and reaches hundreds of children and young adults annually through family-friendly concerts, workshops, music lessons and scholarships.

The Schubert Club Museum located in historic Landmark Center holds a world-class collection comprised of historic keyboards, instruments from around the world, and original letters and manuscripts by famous composers.
