Information from CSU

The California State University system has useful information for seniors who will be attending CSU in the fall and for juniors who want to begin preparing for college math readiness. Refer to the Early Start FAQ for information about the Early Start program for incoming college freshmen and the Early Assessment Program for high school juniors.

Core Curriculum News

Our SFUSD Math Core Curriculum is undergoing another round of revision based on feedback from teachers. You can see an overview of the revisions for each course on our website. Your feedback makes the curriculum stronger; please post resources, corrections, and suggestions to School Loop or through our feedback form: http://tinyurl.com/SFUSDMathFeedback.

Next year, we will be printing and delivering the curriculum in two batches: one in August and one in December. The first batch of units will available in digital format by the end of June to accommodate planning before the delivery of the physical copies. We need your help to estimate the enrollment numbers so that we provide you with the correct materials. Here is a link for your school to provide your estimated enrollment numbers. Andres Marti will send out an email with more information this week.

2016–2017 Math Professional Development

For a summary of all of the high school math professional development structures, see the Math Department website.

Monthly Math Meetings

We are changing the structure of our monthly math meetings so that all schools, small and large, will have a representative. Our goal is to support better communication and provide access for all schools to participate in district-wide discussions. Department chairs from larger schools will continue to represent their schools. We ask that small high schools choose a department representative to attend the monthly after-school meetings (September 15, October 20, November 17, January 19, February 16, March 16, April 20).

Teacher Leader Schools

This August, we will differentiate our PD support for high school math departments based on school size. Your school should have received an email this week describing the plans that apply to your school.

For large high schools, we will support Course Leads to facilitate site-based collaborative planning groups for Common Core math courses, particularly Algebra 1 and Geometry. Course Leads will attend a PD day on August 5th to prepare to lead course collaboration teams at their sites on August 11. During the school year, Course Leads will attend four after-school meetings (September 15, November 17, January 19, March 16).

For smaller high schools, we will lead a Collaboration Day on August 11 for math teachers at a central location TBD. This day will support teachers to think together with district colleagues about math and teaching strategies and to plan collaboratively for the beginning of the school year.

For all math teachers at teacher leader schools, we will have one set of three Collaboration Days (for Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2) in October, and another set in February. Please refer to our website for the dates and more information.

Complex Instruction Program

Schools that have been involved in the Complex Instruction Program will continue to be supported next year through the same structures. Teachers at CI schools who have not taken the CI course have been invited to join us from July 25–29 to dive deep into the theoretical and practical underpinnings of Complex Instruction. All registrants have connected directly with Angela Torres.

CI Collaboration Days will be held on August 1 and 2 for all teachers in CI departments. These days are an opportunity to do math with colleagues within and across site teams, building a vision for collaboration and for what is possible in math classrooms. Teams will have a majority of each day to plan collaboratively with colleagues. All math colleagues, including SPED teachers of math, are invited, whether or not they have taken the CI course. Teams should register with Angela Torres by the end of May.

Support throughout the school year will include monthly Teacher Facilitator Meetings, two to three Video Clubs during the year, and another pair of CI Collaboration Days in February.

Upcoming Opportunities

CPM has organized free PD workshops specifically for SFUSD middle school math teachers and Algebra 1 teachers that will run August 3 through 5 at Marina Middle School. Co-teachers, special education teachers, and paras are also welcome to attend.

Register for a workshop at cpm.gosignmeup.com. Type "SFUSD" into the search box and the four SFUSD workshops will appear. You will need to create an account to register, but there is no cost involved. Here is the direct link to the Algebra 1 workshop: Core Connections Algebra (Grade 9)

If you are interested in academic credit, you will receive information on how to receive 1 CEU (for a small fee) at the workshops.

Contact Andres Marti with any other questions.

Become a leader in Math Ed! The Masters program for Mathematics Education at SF State is recruiting now.  To apply go to: http://coe.sfsu.edu and click on Degrees, Certificates, Credentials and Programs & choose MA Mathematics Education. There is an Information Session on Wednesday, May 25, at 4:30 in Burk Hall, Room 44. You can find more information on the Math Department website.

Small Teacher Impact Grants are available directly for teachers to support classroom-based projects! Resources must be related to professional learning expertise such as books, videos, online courses, coach or consultant fees (onsite and virtual), video cameras, digital devices, and time (substitute teacher expenses for release time).

As you may have seen, our colleagues are leading an effort this April and May to engage employees across the district to help us discover the Core Values that unite all of us. Check out the SFUSD Core Values website for more information and future opportunities to participate, including an online forum in May.

Featured Resource

The publisher of Fathom Dynamic Data Software has provided free licenses to Fathom for all SFUSD high school math teachers and school computers. Fathom is a great tool for exploring statistical concepts visually in high school math courses, including Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and AP Stats. Contact Elizabeth DeCarli for more information.
