The Shakopee School Board held a business meeting on Monday, May 9. All Board Members were present including Reggie Bowerman, Shawn Hallett, Matt McKeand, Tony Pass, Mary Romansky, Scott Swanson, and Angela Tucker.
Board Recognizes State Speech Qualifiers
The Board welcomed and recognized senior Phoebe Hessen and staff member Rachael Evenson at Monday night's meeting for their roles on the Shakopee High School Speech Team this year.
Hessen was one of two students on the team to qualify for the State Speech Tournament this year, along with senior Bonia Biju, who was unable to attend Monday's meeting due to a prior commitment. Hessen qualified for state in the Original Oratory category with her speech "The Power of Pessimism." Biju qualified for state in the Serious Interpretation - Prose event. Evenson is the team's head coach and also serves as an art teacher at the high school.
Board Approves Preliminary 2016-17 Budget
After a presentation by Director of Finance Mike Burlager, the Board unanimously approved the preliminary budget for 2016-17. Burlager will come back to the Board in June to finalize the budget.
Board Discusses Adding Late Start Dates to Future School Calendars
Director of Teaching and Learning Nancy Thul and Shakopee Education Association President Dale Anderson spoke to the Board about the possibility of adding late start dates to future school calendars to address professional development needs within the district.
Thul and Anderson said that they are not recommending any late start dates be added to the 2016-17 school calendar, but that they will come back to the Board at a future business meeting and propose a two-year plan that will include late starts to the 2017-18 and 2018-19 school calendars.
