Wondering what to do this summer?

Summer should be a time of rest and relaxation.
Students work hard all year and now is the time to recharge and have fun.

Finding the right balance between family vacations, camps and chill time along with the great opportunity summer offers to catch up on learning deficits
can be challenging.

At the K&M Center we know that it is important for students to unwind and
enter the new school year recharged.

Here are some tips
to make the most of your family’s summer

  • Time management – Mark the dates that your kids’ summer begins and ends so you know how many weeks you have.
    • If you have more than 1 child and they have a different calendar, you can color code each child’s schedule and see where they have over lap.

  • Planning – What are your goals for the summer?
    • Categories can include: family fun, non-academic skill building, academic enrichment, down time.
      • Many families tend to overschedule and one of the categories can get missed.
      • Get a large wall calendar that spans 3 months for maximum visual effect and plan each week.
      • Check in with your child's teacher to see what skills can be developed to make next year strong. Read More

  • Monitor – Assess your plan.
    • Even if it fits neatly in the scheduled time, does it meet the goals that you set for the summer?
    • Does your one child need academic remediation, but has no fun or down time?
    • Is it a great plan for the kids, but not for you?
      • Are you in the car the whole time?
      • Find the right balance between active time and relaxation time.

Underwood Family Farms
Old MacDonald would have a serious fit of farm envy if he saw the fun kids have here. For starters, they can visit with (and in many cases feed) an array of animals, including donkeys, sheep, chickens, ducks, birds, rabbits, cows, pigs, horses, emus and alpacas—and even watch goats climb overhead on a custom-made “mountain” of balance beams. There are also various attractions, including a bounce house, electric train, petting corral and mini electric tractors. Pony rides are also available to little visitors under four feet tall and/or 75 pounds. Plus, there’s a small playground with bikes and climbing equipment, as well as climbing and sliding structures all around the grounds. The best part? You can pick your own seasonal produce (check the website to see what’s available and when), while pulling wee ones behind you in a wagon.

  1. Take an interesting class at your local community college.
  2. Get a part-time job at the mall.
  3. See how many books you can read this summer.
  4. Coach little league.  Or basketball.  Or soccer.
  5. Work at a summer camp.
  6. Volunteer at the local mobile health clinic, or the animal shelter, or the public library.
  7. Start a business with your friends.
  8. Set a goal that you are 99% certain you won't be able to achieve this summer.  Then go all out and try to achieve it as though your life depended on it.  You'll either get there or get much, much closer than you were at the beginning of the summer.
  9. Learn how to write computer programs.
  10. Pick something that really interests you and see how far you can go with it.
  11. Pick a cause in your community that you care about.  Find groups who care about it, too.  Organize people.
Plan the summer to make sure all summer assignments are completed.

1. Review the summer assignments.
2. Break the assignments into manageable parts.
3. Write the dates each part will be done on a calendar.
4. Check the calendar daily and weekly to check off what has been completed and what is to be done.
