Editorial Welcome 

A warm welcome to the Spring edition of Hélice, the Triple Helix Association Magazine.

We open this issue with Henry’s discussion on the potential role of the Triple Helix in handling global crisis. After Henry’s introduction to this year’s conference theme of Addressing Ecosystem Challenges in the Era of Crisis, Djordje Pinter and Emanuela Todeva present further the theme of the conference, as well as the thematic areas. The 2016 Annual Conference will held in Heildelberg, Germany, in September 2016, and hosted by the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ). The conference organisers are still accepting papers and the abstract submission is still open. We include three scientific articles in this issue (i) Triple Helix models of innovation: are synergies generated at national or regional levels (Loet Leydesdorff); (ii) Open innovation as driver of economic development in emerging markets: as assessment of two Triple Helix projects in Southern Africa (Daniel Nel and Davis Cook); and (iii) From fundraising to innovation ecosystem development: a case study (Andre Hattingh). In our book review section, Branca Terra and her colleagues provide an extensive review of the book Innovation U 2.0: Reinventing University roles in a Knowledge Economy by Louis G Tornatzky and Elaine C Rideout. The Book Review Editor, Branca Terra, welcomes your original and interesting reviews on publications related to the Triple Helix theme. We present new publications by Triple Helix members, as well as interesting and ongoing activities of the Triple Helix Association:  Webinar series,  Thematic Research Groups News; News from our Chapters; and THA News. An especially warm welcome to new THA members, individual and organizational, including JAMK, Finland (Platinum), and Tomsk State University, Russia (Gold).
 
We hope that you enjoy the articles in this issue, and that they inspire you to consider how past work, current endeavors, and future collaborations can be combined to facilitate innovation in communities across all scales, from local to global. We also hope that the ideas presented will develop in the minds of our readership, and potentially spark new projects and approaches to study and apply the Triple Helix framework in different contexts.
