Yes, yes we know. We’ve been banging on about it for weeks, but The Great Escape is really close now. In fact it’s just over a week until we’ll be catching some of the best up and coming music, all the while getting our cardio in by trying to make it from the Green Door Store to The Haunt in ten minutes flat.
But more than any of that, what we’re most pumped for is the Brightonsfinest Alternative Escape Showcase happening on Friday 20th at the beautiful One Church on Gloucester Place, where we’ll be putting on some of our favourite acts who we’ve been nattering about over on our website.
One of our co-headliners, indie-poppers The Magic Gang, surely need no introduction at this point. But we went down to catch them kicking off their headline tour down at Patterns anyway, just to make sure they were still up to scratch and they more than surpassed expectations.
The Island Club is another band we’re overjoyed to have playing for us. On top of running a few questions past them to get better acquainted ahead of them playing for us, we were also down for their gig at The Prince Albert on the 14th If there was any doubt before, the show left us convinced they’re a group destined for greatness.
Wunderkinder grasshopper will also be gracing our stage and we interviewed the young group of musicians to find out a bit more about how they balance playing festivals and going to school.
Capping off the evening will be legendary Brighton ska-punk outfit Los Albertos. Their new This is a Serious Party EP is coming out on the very same day on our Brightonsfinest Presents label and it's really rather bloody good if we do say so ourselves. Fragile Creatures will also be celebrating the release of their new single ‘Stowaways’ out on the same day, so its safe to say its going to be a big one!
It’s not all about us though. We’ve also talked to two bands who are now practically veterans of The Great Escape Festival: left-field indie band The Mystery Jets and DIY Leeds-based punks Eagulls who are gearing up to drop their sophomore effort on Friday 13th.
Ellie Ford is Brighton based act we’ve been getting excited about and her debut album The Other Sun more than lived up to her promise, with its smooth, breezy blend of folk, blues and americana.
Of course April marked the tragic passing of yet another music giant. Adam Kidd reflected upon how Prince was unsurpassed not just as a musical talent but a style icon, a commercial juggernaut and also a sometimes humble, charitable soul.
April 16th was of course Record Store Day and we had our first vinyl compilation out to celebrate. It was such a rip roaring success (we had to hulk another crate of vinyls down to Resident half way through the day) we thought we would go ahead and get started on putting another one together, this time focusing solely on new and emerging acts from Brighton and elsewhere in the country. We’ll have it ready for you sometime in October so keep a look out for more information soon!
Coming up on Brightonsfinest.com in May & June:
