In June, Punjab's new budget will be debated in the provincial assembly to be finalized by July 1st. A new working paper by Anjum Nasim, Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Development and Economic Alternatives (IDEAS), breaks down the budget. It also provides a forecast - still being fine-tuned - for revenue and expenditures. Given certain assumptions about nominal GDP and Punjab's provincial balances, the model predicts an Rs.340 billion surplus by fiscal year 2019/2020. The paper will serve as a manual to an upcoming app developed by IDEAS for policymakers to simulate different scenarios of Punjab's budget.
