Mark Coyle is the new AD at Minnesota. The former Syracuse & Boise State AD was introduced by Prez Kaler at a presser yesterday afternoon & Coyle said the move is very much about his family in the Midwest, in addition to the profile of the Gophers athletic portfolio & the overall institution. Understands he's exiting Syracuse in tough circumstances. Coyle will return to the Twin Cities in June after serving in the department under former AD Maturi from 2001 to 2005 & be paid $850K. (link, link); Turnkey Search's DeFilippo on the developments: "Minnesota’s slate of finalists was really strong and, other than Beth Goetz, never in the media. The Minnesota media guessed and guessed but never had anything. We were able to protect these candidates and conduct a national, 100% confidential search process. President Kaler deserves enormous credit for going after the strongest candidates, including Mark Coyle, with amazing persistence." (personal correspondence); Minnesota will pay Coyle's $500K buyout at Syracuse (link).
Syracuse Asst. to the AD & former FB stand-out Little recounts what yesterday was like within the Orange department, "It surprised all of us. I got a text from Mark saying that he had an opportunity to go to Minnesota. And I was, like, 'Whoa.' It's a shock to everybody. Everybody is walking around in shock." Went on the comment on how many staffers left the office on the news & how the team members Coyle hired from his last stop at Boise State may be feeling, also says Coyle's decision had no impact on his own to take an early retirement. - link
Updates from ACC meetings on Amelia Island: FB HCs around the league push for a centralized replay system, as well as the ability to use more technology on the sidelines. (link); North Carolina AD Cunningham on what worries him most within the on-going NCAA probe, points to the allegations of a lack of institutional control & failure to monitor (link).
From Texas: ESPN's Rittenberg writes on how the leadership changes at Texas have led to quieter voices, so far, on key Big 12 issues. Prez Fenves & AD Perrin noted as "smart, intent listeners who process information before giving their opinions." Former league Commish Beebe says he's heard good things about the duo's leadership. Former Commish Weiberg also comments on Texas's stature within the conference. (link); Longhorns FB HC Strong indicates the line of communication in Austin in better with he, Perrin & Fenves all on the same page (link); Austin American-Statesman's Bohls does not think expansion is in the best interest of Oklahoma FB as the Sooners Board is set to meet today, also suggests UT should look at TCU's Schlossnagle or Florida's O'Sullivan if a Baseball HC change is made (link).
Per reports on Ole Miss FB HC Freeze potentially getting deposed in the situation surrounding former student-athlete Tunsil, "A motion for protective order filed by J. Cal Mayo Jr. and Kate Embry on Tuesday in Lafayette County Circuit Court requests that any possible deposition by Freeze would be conducted through written questions, would only relate to Freeze’s conversations with Tunsil regarding a possible altercation between Tunsil and Miller last summer, would only have parties and counsel related to the case in attendance and would be sealed pending court order." San Jose Mercury News writer Wilner thinks all indications point to UCLA going with Under Armour for its new apparel deal: "Would guess 15 yrs, $250M and Under Armour. Biggest apparel deal in college sports history. Just a guess." (link); "USC's Nike deal a fraction of what UCLA will make & Trojans should have by far the larger contract. They screwed up." (link); "Source: #UCLA gave Adidas every chance but Under Armour believed to have made a bid Bruins couldn't refuse" (link).
Huffpost Sports contributor Atkins argues there's one school who hasn't been getting much play on the Big 12 expansion front who should get far more consideration: Temple. Points to the Owls placement in the large Philadelphia marketplace, a surging FB brand, which includes average attendance of 44,000 last year, momentum for a new on-campus stadium, historic hoops success & its strong academic profile. In closing, "If the media and the Big 12 examines the situation with an open mind, the Owls could swoop in and surprise everyone." - link
Still pulling out key updates from the Knight Commission proceedings earlier in the week, one of which is the recommendation that 100% of revenues paid out to schools from March Madness should be utilized for student-athlete experience enhancements & support, up from the current threshold of 25%. New Co-Vice Chair & former U.S. Secretary of Education Duncan: "It is not only important that the NCAA set a clear and high bar as a matter of principle for use of the revenues it distributes but that it act as soon as possible to do so, especially as NCAA revenues from March Madness escalate dramatically over time in the new tournament contract. Those revenues should be used by institutions to directly support the education and medical care of college athletes—not for coaching salaries, recruiting, and building more athletics facilities." If we’ve got a coach performing at a high level we’ll probably sit down with them, with potential of (doing so) for other ones as well." - link

If you want to learn more about the TV industry, Nielsen ratings & the impact of cord cutting, I've enjoyed following both Fox Sports SVP for Programming & Research @mulvihill79 & @SportsTVRatings. Lately, both have been discussing in-home versus out-of-home viewership figures, which is still incredibly lopsided for the former. Yesterday, Mulvihill also pointed out the growth of soccer engagement on TV here in the States that has quickly jumped from 4B minutes of viewing in 2003 to 42.2B in 2015.

UTEP MBB HC Floyd with a contentious back & forth with local sportstalk radio host Kaplowitz during a press conference on Tuesday, "Why would I call you every time you throw out something that is incorrect? I've got other things to do with my job. I can't do that 24/7. We'll give you information when we're ready to give you information. But I'm going to give it to people who are responsible." Goes on to say he wishes he had never gone onto Kaplowitz's show in the past, to which Kaplowitz responded, "You're classless for saying that in front of the media." Floyd got the last word in, "You know I'm dead a$$ right. It's fiction. Your show is fiction." - link
Louisville MBB HC Pitino pushing for the reduction of two scholarships in 2016 to satisfy self-imposed sanctions of one in 2017-18 & another in 2018-19. In his mailbag, Fox Sports columnist Mandel says if the Big 12 is going to create a TV network, it probably needs new markets outside Texas & the current league footprint to have a better shot at larger carriage fees. Does not foresee another movement for the 'Power 5' until the mid-20s when most TV deals expire. Also, indicates that Ole Miss may not know the outcome of the Laremy Tunsil comments until after the upcoming FB season. - link
Oregon accepts $242K in a settlement deal ending a legal dispute that stemmed from unfulfilled insurance coverage. UO paid a $490K premium for a Lloyds of London insurance policy to cover incentive bonuses for the FB staff, which at the end of the nearly undefeated 2012-13 season totaled $688K. Per the suit, the Ducks couldn't collect because "the insurance covered only scenarios triggering 'maximum bonuses' owed to the coaches had the team played in or won the BCS Championship, finished the season ranked No. 1 in the country, won the Pac 12 championship game or won 12 regular season games." Middleman broker Gallagher Risk Management Service and Marsh U.S. Consumer ended up owing UO $125K and $117K, respectively, in the settlement. - link
Several University of California system ADs propose a policy that would enhance academic & life skills support for all student- athletes & nearly triple the number of UC student-athletes guaranteed financial aid to continue in school after a career-ending sports injury. A state law in 2012 effectively covered student athletes for such scenarios on the Berkeley and UCLA campuses, but this new proposal would extend to others in the system at the DI and DII levels: Davis, Irvine, Riverside, Santa Barbara and San Diego. Of the 2,686 athletic scholarships doled out by the UC last year, only 968 of them went to the two Pac-12 schools in the state. - link
