Council Approves Zoning Amendment for Walmart
On May 24th, City of Kawartha Lakes Council approved the zoning amendment that will accommodate Walmart’s request for additional grocery space for their proposed Lindsay store.

This decision paves the way for Mason Homes to prepare the site and allow Fieldgate Development to proceed with construction of the Walmart store. Mason Homes will develop residential homes in the vicinity. Detailed planning with both of these developers is ongoing.

For more information, visit the City of Kawartha Lakes website.
Adding Value to Local Food Systems Through Access to Commercial Kitchen Facilities
As the global population continues to rise, less and less people are able to access healthy food.  Locally-based food projects such as community kitchen projects and farmer’s markets have emerged as a way to address the current problems with globalized food systems. The City of Kawartha Lakes and the Kawartha Lakes Food Coalition, in partnership with Ecosystem Management Technology students at Fleming College conducted a survey to assess the demand for and availability of commercial and community kitchens within the Kawartha Lakes region. Ontario Farmland prices increased 6.6 per cent in 2015
Farm Credit Canada has released its annual provincial and national overview of land value trends across Canada. Average farmland values in Canada continued to rise in 2015. Nationally and in many key agriculture regions, the average value of farmland increased at a slower pace last year. Overall, there appears to be greater volatility with a higher number of locales where values decreased. Eastern Ontario prices are generally significantly lower than those in mid-western Ontario.

Fenelon Falls Corridor Study Update
On May 10th, 2016 the Fenelon Falls Corridor Environmental Assessment (Class EA) Completion was presented and received by Council. The Study was completed to identify solutions to address transportation deficiencies along the Kawartha Lakes Road 121 corridor and provided recommendations for improvements for vehicle capacity, pedestrian safety and accessibility.

Preferred recommendations include the installation of pedestrian crossings, sidewalk and shoulder improvements, upgraded traffic signals and turning lane capacity.

In addition to the current recommendations, Council has directed staff to include an EA for a by-pass or second crossing in Fenelon Falls in the 2018 budget for Council consideration. Initiating the environmental assessment process for the design of a secondary crossing in 2018 allows the City to preplan for when the existing bridge reaches capacity. This has been estimated to occur in 2027.
