Day of Mindfulness: Cultivating Self-Compassion with Diana Winston

Self-judgment and self-criticism are a huge source of suffering for many people. Some of us are plagued by painful thoughts and emotions such as, "I'm not good enough," "I'm going to fail," and "I hate my body." Although these thoughts may feel overwhelming and intractable, we can learn how to work with and lessen them. Science has shown that you can actually change your brain through mindfulness and the cultivation of positive emotional states.

In this daylong, we will explore mindfulness practices to work with self-critical thoughts, and self-compassion practices to nurture kindness and compassion for ourselves and others. The day will include sitting and walking mindfulness and kindness meditations, periods of silence, personal exploration, and discussion to help cultivate and encourage more self-compassion. Appropriate for beginners and those who have been practicing for some time.

THIS EVENT IS FREE TO STUDENTS

When: Saturday, May 21 10am-4pm
Where: Neuroscience Research Building (NRB) auditorium 635 Charles E. Young Drive, South, Los Angeles, CA 90095
Please go on http://marc.ucla.edu/body.cfm?id=35 for additional details.

MARC Free Drop-In Meditations

Mindful Awareness is the moment-by-moment process of actively and openly observing one's physical, mental and emotional experiences. Mindfulness has scientific support as a means to reduce stress, improve attention, boost the immune system, reduce emotional reactivity, and promote a general sense of health and well-being.

The weekly "drop-in" sessions are led by UCLA Mindful Awareness Research Center's Diana Winston, Marvin G. Belzer Ph.D, or guest teachers.

Open to anyone interested in learning how to 'live more presently' in life.

Trauma-Informed Yoga
The CARE Office believes in all forms of healing and this program will explore connection to the self through mind, body, and spirit. The impact that trauma has on the body’s physiology is far-reaching and CARE is committed to providing alternative forms of healing for survivors. Trauma-informed yoga provides survivors a means of becoming reacquainted with their bodies, helps them become grounded in the present moment, and allows them to explore the benefits of mindfulness.

This program will last for 10 weeks during the summer from June 21 to September 23.
If interested, please complete an application form and submit it via email to: zyamasaki@caps.ucla.edu or drop it off at the CAPS front desk by May 16th. The interest form can be found by clicking on the image above.
