PLEBEIAN GRANDSTAND "False Highs, True Lows"

PLEBEIAN GRANDSTAND "False Highs, True Lows"
CD - $8.75 / 12"LP - $13.75
THROATRUINER / THROATR053

Great bands inspire vocations, PLEBEIAN GRANDSTAND annihilate them. It’s hard not to laugh hysterically while listening to the band’s third album False Highs, True Lows», which destroys any desire to play music that intense. Formed in Toulouse in 2005, the french quartet never ceased to feed its insatiable appetite for dissonance and bleakness, slowly morphing from their former noisy, metallic hardcore to what could be the ultimate blend of black metal, sludge and noise. On the heels of their acclaimed 2014 album «Lowgazers» and after countless shows in North America, India and Europe that forged their new rhythmical section, the band returned to Amaury Sauvé’s The Apiary studio during december 2015 to prove that their previous body of work was just a ladder to something even more suffocating.

False Highs, True Lows» is PLEBEIAN GRANDSTAND’s most accomplished effort to date; with guitars ranging between dry-heaving riffs, light-speed melodies and crushing sludgier parts, a terrifying, surgically savage drum performance full of maniacal blasts beats and martial rhythms, and the most angst-ridden vocal performance since the invention of waterboarding. Despite the fact that the record was tracked live and no matter how organic the spectacular production job sounds, everything seems barely played by humans. This is the culmination of three decades of extreme and forward-thinking music spitted out with the visceral, abrasive approach of their early days, and an out-of-this-world recording by one of the most intimidating, essential acts ouf our time.

VERDUN "The Eternal Drift's Canticles"

VERDUN "The Eternal Drift's Canticles"
CD - $8.75 / 2x12"LP - $17.50
THROATRUINER / THROATR054

Arisen in 2011 from the fertile scene of Montpellier, France, VERDUN made a name in the realm of slow and heavy music on the basis of a simple three-tracks demo, leaving a strong impression on every witness of the band’s thunderous live shows. With a line-up solidified after a few european tours and opening slots for forefathers such as Electric Wizard, Eyehategod or YOB, the band finally delivers their long-awaited debut album, mixed and mastered by Tad Doyle.

The Eternal Drift’s Canticles is the fruit of three years of crafting; far from simple amp-worship, the band excels at creating memorable tracks with their science of instant-classic riffs. A richer background emanate from these guitars, able to tint their sludge/doom roots with metallic hardcore toughness or burden-of-the-world melodies. Another strong component of VERDUN’s trademark sound comes from these charismatic vocals, switching between echoed screams from outer space, spoken words or mournful clean vocals. With an arid, heavy as hell sound, The Eternal Drift’s Canticles is a 55-minutes dark and painful procession that transcends the heritage of too-often codified scenes, running away from simply rehashing the past.

PRAISE "Leave It All Behind"

PRAISE "Leave It All Behind"
12"LP - $8.75
REACT / RXR052v

While the genre of hardcore most often brings to mind aggressive, chaotic live shows and blistering sonic intensity, some of most promising output from those within the hardcore scene has been created when these musicians strive for something more melodic. Just as Youth of Today evolved into Shelter, 7 Seconds expanded their sound over time, and Minor Threat gave way to Dag Nasty and Embrace, an experienced group of hardcore diehards have come together to form Praise. The band steps in a more melodic direction than the notable list of other bands they've spent time in, especially evident on their newest offering, "Leave It All Behind."

Originally formed in 2009, Praise set out from the beginning to showcase their less aggressive side, pulling deeply from the roots of mid-'80s DC, while still providing a contemporary spin. The band teamed with REACT! Records to release an EP and single (2010's "Growing. Changing. Healing." and 2011's "Two Songs"), followed by their fantastic debut LP, "Lights Went Out" in 2014, before slowing down to tackle personal struggles and explore other musical endeavors.

Now, with a slightly modified line-up and renewed enthusiasm for their unique brand of melodic hardcore, Praise have created their most interesting release to date. Entitled "Leave It All Behind," this seven song EP marks a decidedly more tuneful tendency and exhibits a strength of songwriting that only comes from playing together for all these years. Where their previous releases felt indicative of their origins, this EP undeniably feels like something fresh and exciting.

Bossk are an atmospheric post-everything band from Ashford, Kent, England.

Over the course of a decade Bossk have blurred the lines between the Post Metal and Post Rock subgenres, earning cult like status in the underground music scene. They’ve selectively shared stages with bands including …And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead, Cult of Luna, Dragged Into Sunlight, and many more.

They have also made a number of festival appearances including including Damnation, Roadburn, Temples, etc. “Audio Noir” is a truly transcendent aural experience. Opener “The Reverie” transports the listener to new dimensions through hypnotic repetition and layered instrumentation before taking a turn into stoner doom territory with “Heliopause”. Emotional instrumental ”Relancer” builds to a sonic crescendo while leading to the awesome “Kobe”. A song that shifts a multitude of gears before setting into one of the more chaotic hooks the band has ever produced. “Atom Smasher” then carries some of the heaviest moments of the album before beautifully disintegrating into the touching track “Nadir”. Lastly, Bossk unveil “The Reverie II”, a brilliant ten minute reprise that shows the band at the peak of their creative powers. Solidifying “Audio Noir” as the best kind of masterpiece; a sea change that the music world never saw coming.

PINEGROVE "Cardinal"

PINEGROVE "Cardinal"
CASSETTE TAPE - $5.65 / 12"LP - $13.75
RUN FOR COVER / RFC147

After a number of different releases and years of touring, Montclair, New Jersey’s Pinegrove have offered their finest work to date with their newest LP, Cardinal. The band’s captivating blend of indie rock, pop and country elements is more vivid, fine-tuned, and addictive than ever before. Vocalist/guitarist Evan Stephens Hall along with brothers Zack Levine (drums) and Nick Levine (guitar) form a core that has been playing together since early childhood. Painting his emotions onto these songs with colorful and kinetic strokes, Hall moves through Cardinal’s eight songs with unforgettable energy and passion, with a vocal performance that is pleasantly reminiscent of Will Oldham and Built to Spill’s Doug Martsch. Highlighted by the downtrodden nostalgia of twangy opener “Old Friends” and the climactic refrain of “Size of the Moon,” where the confession “I don’t know what I’m afraid of,” is just as much of a sing-a-long as it is an emotional breakdown, moods don’t stay in one place for very long on Cardinal - they are carefully crafted and revisited throughout to continually evoke the album’s central themes of memory, language, and home.

PITY SEX "WHITE HOT MOON"

PITY SEX "White Hot Moon"
CASSETTE TAPE - $5.65 / 12"LP - $13.75
RUN FOR COVER / RFC133

Ann Arbor's Pity Sex built the world of White Hot Moon, their second album, inch-by-inch. The group, formed in 2011 by childhood friends and lifelong collaborators Sean St. Charles (co-lyricist/drums) and Brennan Greaves (vocals/guitar), came together explicitly to try its hand at writing pop songs. St. Charles and Greaves were putting their hardcore band to rest, enlisting Britty Drake (co-lyricist/vocals/guitar) and Brandan Pierce (bass) to round out Pity Sex's line-up. Now, the band is using the foundation of 2013's celebrated Feast of Love as the framework for something bigger, stronger, and altogether more monumental. Coming off of tours with Ceremony, Eskimeaux, and Colleen Green—including a run in Australia—the band dove into the studio with Feast of Love producer Will Yip to harness that momentum into an album to showcase Pity Sex's growth. And if White Hot Moon wears its ambition on its sleeve, that's by design: the band looked to wide-screen albums by Yo La Tengo and Sonic Youth for inspiration in finding a bigger sound. That shows: Drake and Greaves spin huge webs of sound, anchored in shoegaze but branching off in a dozen directions, from fuzzed-out power-pop (“Bonhomie”) to shimmering balladry (“Dandelion”) and back again, while St. Charles and Pierce lock into step subtly counterintuitive rhythms and floor-shaking low-end.

That inclusive attitude toward songwriting fuels Pity Sex's creative fires. Drake’s more intimate and confessional songs complement St. Charles’s imagistic lyrics, and vice versa. This confluence enriches White Hot Moon and encourages compositional complexity and a shared affinity for pop solidity in equal measure. The record features some of the most directly collaborative songwriting in the band's career, and that spirit has taken them in exciting directions—often several at once, dipping into different stylistic touchstones while maintaining a constant, grounding sense of emotion throughout. As St. Charles explains, “We thought a lot about pop conventions and how they work, and we're purposefully playing around with that.” The result of this playful but dedicated approach to their craft: wherever you visit White Hot Moon, you'll come away refreshed, revitalized, and ready for Pity Sex to guide you along the rest of the trip.

TENEMENT "Bruised Music Vol. 2

TENEMENT "Bruised Music Vol. 2"
12"LP - $11.90
GRAVE MISTAKE / GRAVE078v

In the summer of 2009, Appleton, Wisconsin punk group Tenement prepared to embark on yet another trip across the United States in their 1986 Dodge short bus. Like their recording sessions of the time period, their method of travel was often grueling and economical. They played with brutal honesty and they lived with brutal honesty. After a violent incident that resulted in a lot of blood, a lot of broken glass, and the dismissal of half of the rhythm section from the group, this behavioral pattern would ultimately lead to the demise of the first major lineup of the band, and usher in a new era of introspection and experimentation.

In 2011, their first two full length records, Napalm Dream and The Blind Wink, were released only a few months apart and lead to Tenement's widespread recognition as one of America's most notable melodic punk bands. Four years later, they released what many critics, from The New York Times to Rolling Stone, viewed as their major statement and first big achievement- Predatory Headlights. Their new singles collection, brought to you by Grave Mistake Records and Toxic Pop Records, represents the time between the release of their early LPs and their 2015 sprawling double album.

Bruised Music, Volume Two is not only a collection of singles, but really a collection of transitional tunes that would form the basis of their present sound and distance them from their early juvenile aesthetic and more simplistic approach to the punk idiom. Eric Mayer joined the group on drums at the onset of this period, and two original members Amos Pitsch and Jesse Ponkamo, on guitar and bass respectfully, continued as the melodic force. Much of the material heard within was recorded at home on 8 track machine and cassette recorders; though a small portion of it was engineered and mixed by Napalm Dream and Predatory Headlights' production mastermind, Justin Perkins. These selections have a distinct sheen and lend a signature quality to the record as a whole.

You'll hear the first inkling of Tenement's interest in the fusion of classical stringed instruments and pop music in "Wouldn't Let You Go", an instrumental piece called "Jet Slug" that sits somewhere between Pavement and Ferrante & Teicher, the chunky blown out punk/pop of "Blast Exhaust" and "Taking Everything" which seem too aggressive to label simply as "pop punk" yet too melodic to label as "hardcore", the acoustic ballad "Your Sway..." with Nick Drake-esque chord patterns. You'll hear the twinkling pianos of "Perverse Universe" and the jangling, sparkling guitars and lush vocal harmonies of "Paper Airplanes", and it will sound so achingly familiar yet so hard to generalize or pin down. This is the very sorcery of Tenement, and on Bruised Music, Volume Two, the spell is stronger than ever.

Fourteen Tracks in all, including material compiled from the Taking Everything EP, split 7" w/ Culo, split 7" with Cheeky, Freak Cast in Iron "Sick Club" 7" single, Puke and Destroy Vol. 2 7" compilation, and split 7" w/ Screaming Females. All material has once again been mastered for this release by Daniel Husayn at North London Bomb Factory.

VVOVNDS "Descending Flesh"
12"LP + CD - $14.25 / CD - $7.00
HYPER TENSION / HYPER021

Nasty, sludgy hardcore punk for the furious, for the restless and for the adventurous - these are VVOVNDS that will leave deep scars!

A VVOVNDS full-length album almost seems like a physical impossibility at first. Since erupting on the scene a few years ago, the Belgian four-piece seem to live and die within the short minute-and-a-bit, at most, that their song-bombs last. They are flashwounds, opening, exploding, closing, almost before you can realise what's going on, leaving only deep scars to remember them by afterwards. And yet, here they are, “swallowing nails // spitting riffs”, as they put it themselves, or dreaming really fast, as Bill Murray would, for almost half an hour. We don't know how they take it, we don't know how we will, but everyone will just have to run for cover and try to survive.

The punk of VVOVNDS is immediate, it hits hard and deep, but yet it still defies easy descriptions. Like their name, they leave things simple, their boots firmly planted in the roots of the hardcore punk genre, but at the same time it's impossible to find an easy reference point, the traditional sounds-just-like-x, because for them x doesn't mark just one spot spot. They have a lot of xs, scratched in blood throughout the walls of genres like powerviolence, sludge and who knows what else, as long as it's covered in bile, blood and tears.

Although comparisons are difficult to find and far-fetched, we’ll give it a try: imagine all members from Converge, Lightning Bolt, Ice Age, Uniform and Some Girls caught in a drunken bar fight, all armed with rusty prisonknives…

BOTCH "061502"
2x12"LP - $21.00
HYDRA HEAD / HH666-086v

The first ever time on vinyl.

“This is your last chance.”

That statement near the tail end of the final Botch show says it all. Starting out as wannabe hardcore kids from Tacoma, Washington, over the course of eight years they morphed into one of the most iconic and influential bands of their generation.

After breaking up, the members wound up in so many renowned projects (Russian Circles, Minus the Bear, These Arms are Snakes, Narrows) that some may argue Botch's mathrock/ noisecore was just a stepping stone, part of their evolution. But no one in attendance can deny feeling a void open when the stage lights went up at Seattle's Showbox on June 15th, 2002.

Focusing primarily on material from their two critically admired full-lengths, the quartet played to a sold out audience, fans flying in from around the world to hear the goodbye. And in just a little over an hour, Botch showed everyone what they'd been building up to.

The band had no interest in going out with some pristine, polished relic. This isn't a studio-quality recording with applause thrown in. It's a barely contained maelstrom, the band wrecking their instruments and assailing the audience. It captures, as best as it can, what it felt like to be there: the deranged, macerating guitar work of Dave Knudson skittering over Brian Cook's obscene bass tone; Tim Latona's algebraic rhythms hammering behind the screams of Dave Verellen; the crowd, as one body, mournfully singing “It's so quiet here” before the mayhem begins again.

It seems as if every band is doing a reunion nowadays, and many are clamoring for Botch to finally join the crowd. But whether or not that happens, this one night was successfully captured, where four friends walked on stage together and played as though it would never happen again.
