Inflection Point: Supply, Demand and the Future of Work in the Pittsburgh Region
Last week, the Allegheny Conference released a new report that provides a forward look at the coming transformation of work across the Pittsburgh region, and its implications for employers, educators and workforce talent. Called Inflection Point: Supply, Demand and the Future of Work in the Pittsburgh Region, the report is a real call to action to employers across our region.
In the next 10 years, the Pittsburgh region’s workforce will be entirely transformed due to retirements, job growth and occupational transitions that will require new skills from existing employees. More than 290,000 Baby Boomers now in the workforce are eligible to retire over this period, and more than 50,000 new jobs are expected to be created here. The real news is the opportunities and challenges presented in the report. More than one million jobs are expected to be reengineered by 2025, transforming today’s entire workforce over the next 10 years.

GPCC Supported Energy Modernization Act Passes U.S. Senate
In recent years our region has re-emerged as the new center of American energy. Now the federal government is moving forward on efforts to bring energy policy into the 21st century with the "Energy Policy Modernization Act.” The GPCC, through our federal coalition, the Great Lakes Metro Chambers Coalition, supported the measure and helped shape key provisions key to our region's energy future. The U.S. Senate passed the bill on April 20, by a vote of 85-12.
This bill represents the first broad legislative attempt to address growing issues for the nation's energy sector since 2007. It has generally seen bipartisan support. Provisions included in the bill touch upon grid reliability, energy efficiency, energy-related workforce training programs and LNG terminal applications, which would impact efforts to support downstream use of natural gas produced in our region. The bill also attempts to make it easier for small businesses to access the National Labs, and increases the authorizations for the Office of Science in the U.S. Department of Energy, ARPA-E, and the Army Corp of Engineers.

Orange Cones = Act 89 at Work
Speaking of transportation infrastructure investment, construction season has begun on our roads and bridges.
PennDOT is making significant progress on bridge repairs and upgrades thanks to increased state transportation funding resulting from the passage of Act 89 in 2013. Please remember we thank you for your support in working alongside the Allegheny Conference and the Greater Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce to make that important investment in our infrastructure a reality.
