Country Doctors recognised for Long Service

Fifty-two of South Australia’s country doctors who have served rural communities for more than 1600 years collectively were honoured at the RDWA Annual Conference Dinner on Saturday night.

The doctors were recognised for their outstanding contribution to the health of people living in rural and remote South Australia.

South Australia’s Governor, the Honourable Hieu Van Le presented 25 and 35 year long service medals to the doctors.

The doctors have served in locations ranging from Coober Pedy to Kimba, from Kapunda to Yorketown and everywhere in between.

“Their contribution to the health and well-being of rural and remote communities is outstanding,” said RDWA CEO, Ms Lyn Poole.

“Almost without exception, these doctors are still making a contribution to rural health, including 10 who are now working as locums for the RDWA, providing support to allow resident doctors to take leave,” she said.

"Conservatively, these 52 doctors have provided around 10 million patient consultations. On top of that they’ve birthed hundreds of babies, given anaesthetics, performed surgeries and saved countless numbers of lives in the Emergency Departments of our Country hospitals,” said Ms Poole.

“In anyone’s terms, these are extraordinary achievements.”

The RDWA congratulate and thank for their contribution:

RDWA Annual Conference 2016
'100% OF OUR FUTURE - Managing children's health in country'

The RDWA Annual Conference was held on Friday and Saturday at the Adelaide Convention Centre. An exceptional turnout of 93 GPs from across rural South Australia attended the event which focused on the management of child and youth health conditions seen regularly in rural general practice.  Topics included neo-natal emergencies, diabetes, immunisation, mental health, substance use and trauma management.

A pre-conference workshop was attended by 32 doctors on the Fellowship Pathway and focused on musculoskeletal conditions to assist in preparation for Fellowship exams.

A record number of 94 medicine, allied health and nursing university students attended the student program on Friday, which included key note speakers on leadership, mental health presentations, round table discussions with rural health professionals and a series of clinical skills stations. Twenty students participated in an exclusive opportunity to build prosthetic hands for victims of land-mines in developing countries while in conversation with key health leaders from South Australia.

A fun and entertaining family program ran alongside the conference and included a cooking class for the kids and afternoon tea for parents on Friday, along with trampolining followed by lunch and a native wildlife show on Saturday.
