Every month we celebrate story with a different theme according to the Leigh Hobbs 'It's Your Story' Calendar. In May we #ReadTheWorldAStory.
  • Check out our 'Read the world a story' activity ideas, book lists and resources below
  • Download the 2016 calendar here
  • Share the results of your story hunting adventures online with the hashtag #ReadTheWorldAStory
  1. Set time aside each day to read a story out loud to someone – your parent while they are cooking dinner, your friend in the playground at school, your pet while you sit under a tree together!
  2. Ask someone to read aloud to you – your principal at assembly, your grandparent in the garden, your local café owner, your brother or sister or best friend.
  3. How many words can you read in ten minutes? Add them up, then discover how many that means you could read in an hour?
  4. Set yourself a Read Aloud Challenge. Can you read all of Leigh Hobb’s Mr Tom books in May?

  • Visit the ACLA website and go to the Support Us section. Can you find the answer to these questions?
    • How many children have the Laureates already spoken directly to during their visits around Australia?
    • The Laureate spoke at Bruny Island District School – what state is Bruny Island part of?
    • How many regional and remote communities have the Laureates been to so far?

  • Would you like to help raise funds for the future plans and activities of the Australian Children’s Laureate? Perhaps you could ask your teacher, librarian or Principal if you could plan an event – read one of Leigh Hobbs’ books aloud at school, have a food stall, ask people to bring a gold coin and write the word LAUREATE in gold coins in the playground…send your donation to ACLA in Melbourne.

  • Attend the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s (CBCA) 12th National Conference – Read: Myriad Possibilities! – at the Menzies Hotel in Sydney on May 20 and 21. Meet a myriad of the best of Australia’s authors and illustrators

Congratulations to Noni Hazlehurst

  • Take part in National Simultaneous Storytime on May 25 at 11am. The book to be shared this year is I Got This Hat by Jol & Kate Temple, illustrated by Jon Foye. Visit the NSS website and look at the suggested activities that you can do to have reading fun with this book.
  • Speaking of hats Jon Klassen is the amazing artist behind the wickedly entertaining books I Want My Hat Back and This Is Not My Hat. He's visiting Australia in May and doing children's workshops in Melbourne and Sydney. Don't miss him!
  • Pioneers in Petticoats is a play about “four inspiring women who helped shape today’s Australia”. It is being performed at various Historic Houses in NSW during May. Bookings and further information here.

Kids and Family Reading Report

Last week Scholastic Australia released the Kids and Family Reading Report. The study shines a light on the independent reading behaviours and attitudes of Australian children aged 6–17 years, and their parents, plus parents of children 0–5 years.

There's a lot of useful data and findings in the report, including the conclusion that 86% of kids like or love being read to aloud at home – which is appropriate since the story theme for May is #ReadTheWorldAStory and National Simultaneous Storytime takes place on May 25. We recommend taking a look at the final report.
