National Mental Health Awareness Month

Presidential Proclamation - National Mental Health Awareness Month, 2016: Nearly 44 million American adults, and millions of children, experience mental health conditions each year, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and post-traumatic stress.  Although we have made progress expanding mental health coverage and elevating the conversation about mental health, too many people still do not get the help they need.

During National Mental Health Awareness Month, we recognize those Americans who live with mental illness and substance use disorders, and we pledge solidarity with their families who need our support as well.  Let us strive to ensure people living with mental health conditions know that they are not alone, that hope exists, and that the possibility of healing and thriving is real.  Together, we can help everyone get the support they need to recover as they continue along the journey to get well.  Read the full declaration here.
Population Health & Public Spending Study

Policy makers are now placing more emphasis on the role of social determinants in influencing individual and population health. To date though, little has been known about the correlation between state spending for social services and public health and the health of individuals. Elizabeth Bradley’s team at Yale University broke new ground by finding that people living in states that spend more on public health and social programs such as education, income support, recreational programs, and housing fare significantly better on a range of health outcomes, compared to states with less spending in these areas. The data were obtained through a retrospective longitudinal study of all states and the District of Columbia for the period 2000-09. The authors suggest that their findings underscore the value of broadening the debate beyond what should be spent on health care to include what should be invested in social services and public health.
