Scherzer hits Kinsler...and strikes him out

Games played May 11, 2016

Red-hot Milwaukee RF Ryan Braun had three singles and an RBI in Milwaukee's 3-2 loss to Miami, extending his hitting streak to a team-high 11 games and raising his season average to .380.

In what might spell the end of his 11-year MLB career, the Miami Marlins designed reliever Craig Breslow for assignment Wednesday. The brainy, big-hearted lefty was ineffective in his last seven appearances, going 0-1 with a 10.80 ERA, 3.2 walks/hits per innings, and zero strikeouts. Breslow's career peaked in 2013, when he went 5-2 with a 1.82 ERA for the Red Sox, but the 35-year-old southpaw has been shaky since.

If Breslow's MLB career is indeed over, it will have been Ryan Braun who knocked in the final run against him. Braun hit an RBI single off Breslow in the 9th inning of Monday's game, Breslow's last appearance.

Washington's Max Scherzer (who is not Jewish) struck out a record-tying 20 batters Wednesday, and slumping Tigers 2B Ian Kinsler contributed three of the Ks in a 3-2 loss. In perhaps the oddest play of a historic day, Scherzer struck out Kinsler despite hitting him on the elbow. Kinsler was better on the field, where two double plays upped his season total to 36, No. 2 among MLB second basemen.

Blue Jays CF Kevin Pillar singled in a 5-4, extra-inning loss to the Giants. He made a diving save in center field after initially losing the ball in the sun.

Joc Pederson walked and had a sharply-hit, ground-out RBI in the 9th inning, but it wasn't enough to avoid a 4-3 loss to the Mets.

Cubs LF Ryan Kalish had pinch-hit appearances in both games of a doubleheader sweep by the Padres but did not reach base. ESPN's Jesse Rogers predicts that Kalish -- who is 2-for-7 with 2 RBIs and a walk since being called-up -- will be sent back to the minors when LF Matt Szczur comes off the disabled list.

Scott Feldman's streak of perfect relief appearances ended at three, but he maintained a four-game scoreless streak in a 5-3 win over Cleveland. The 6'7" righty yielded two hits and struck out one over one inning.

Danny Valencia's strained hamstring idled him again Wednesday. Oakland could have used his bat, as Boston won 13-3 to complete a three-game sweep.

On this date:

  • May 12, 1992: Happy 24th birthday to Athletics prospect Michael Fagan and Giants prospect Adam Sonabend
  • May 12, 1999: The Cubs' Ken Holtzman shut out the Astros 2-0 and went 3-for-4 at the plate (see bio)
