NEW AGREEMENT WITH GPRC INCREASES OPPORTUNITIES FOR FINE ARTS STUDENTS IN ALBERTA
 
Grande Prairie Regional College (GPRC) and ACAD are increasing options for Alberta students to continue to pursue their careers in the arts.
 
GPRC President and CEO President Don Gnatiuk and ACAD President and CEO Dr. Daniel Doz signed an agreement on April 27, 2016 that provides the opportunity for GPRC Fine Arts students to transfer directly into ACAD’s degree programs. MORE>>
SUSTAINABILITY PLANNING UPDATE 
 
We are planning for the next 100 years – a process that is comprehensive and will set the stage for significant change at the College.
 
ACAD’s vision of art, craft, and design education is based on the principle that an immersive, inclusive studio-based art, craft and design education supports both professional pursuits and lifelong learning. ACAD has made a commitment to deliver a fully integrated business plan to the Government of Alberta, Ministry of Advanced Education in September of 2016. MORE>>
A BEER AND BRANDING COLLABORATION
 
A beer and branding collaboration with Village Brewery, ACAD and National on 8th celebrated a second year on April 21, 2016. The group partnered to provide ACAD communication design students a chance to test out their skills in a real-world environment and to inspire community partnerships.
 
ACAD students desiged branding materials for limited edition Village beers based on judging and feedback from the team at Village over the last semester in a Visual Communications Brand Design 101 course. The top four designs have been selected and the students collaborated with the Village brewers to create their cask of beer. MORE>>

Buliding access is daily 7 a.m - 11 p.m.

Our annual Grad Show is an exciting chance to meet and view the work of ACAD’s 2016 class of artists and designers. The exhibition is an exciting chance to view the work of graduating students from ACAD’s Ceramics, Drawing, Fibre, Glass, Jewellery + Metals, Media Arts + Digital Technologies, Painting, Photography, Print Media, Sculpture, and Visual Communication Design programs. MORE>>

Given that spirituality was a priority for our prehistoric ancestors, it deserves further investigation. The human tendency to explain our existence in the universe through art transcends era and geography. These cross-cultural means of expression are used to communicate publically in a way that resonates with the viewer on an intuitive level. MORE>>
CARLY HYNES CREATES 2016 PRESIDENT'S CONVOCATION SHAWL

The President’s Convocation Shawl is an annual competition undertaken by Fibre majors in their graduating year to produce the shawl worn by the President during Convocation on Thursday, May 19.

Previous shawls are then worn by academics in order of seniority. These shawls represent more than 11 years of this tradition at ACAD and demonstrate the superb talent, creativity and dedication of the students who have produced them. MORE>>
KALEB ROMANO, CERAMICIST 2016 PRESIDENT'S CUPS

In the Fall of 2011, ACAD President, Dr. Daniel Doz initiated an annual ceramics competition, “The President’s Cups”. Students are invited to submit their design entries to a jury and the winning student is given a monetary award and reimbursed the cost of materials.

The artist creates 15 cups and eight bowls based on their design submission.

Ceramics faculty, Juliana Rempel organized this year’s competition with the President’s Office and Kaleb Romano’s cup design was selected. MORE>>

ALUMNI KUDOS
Alumna Shona Rae wins Best in Show in Metal Arts Guild of Canada Exhibition 
 
Shona was selected as Best in Show in the upcoming Metal Arts Guild of Canada's Innovation Exhibition from Thursday, May 5 until Thursday, June 2. 
 
Shona Rae was also a recipient of a 2016 ACAD Alumni Legacy Award. 
 
 
FOUR ACAD ALUMNI RECEIVE LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR EMERGING ARTIST AWARDS
 
The Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards Foundation awarded a total of $40,000 to four ACAD Alumni that were named as recipients of their 2016 Emerging Artist Award.

Ryan Sluggett, BFA (Painting) 2003, will also be awarded the ACAD Board of Governors’ Alumni Award of Excellence at the 2016 Convocation ceremony. The Award recognizes the truly outstanding accomplishments of an ACAD alumnus who has earned national or international prominence as a result of their outstanding professional/ artistic achievements and/or service to society.

Chris Cran - Sincerely Yours
 
May 20 to Sept 2016 
 
Considered one of Canada’s most notable contemporary artists, Alberta’s Chris Cran is renowned for his humorous and inventive takes on traditional genres such as still life, portraiture, landscape and abstraction. Challenging perception and understanding of major movements such as Pop art, Op art, Modernist Abstraction and Photorealism, Cran playfully combines art history with imagery borrowed from popular culture. Surveying Cran’s artistic production over the past forty years, the exhibition features over 100 paintings and drawings from the national collection, other institutions and private lenders, and is the most comprehensive exhibition on Cran ever produced. MORE>>

Walter May - Object Lessons

Lecturer Emeritus: sculpture, Walter May, is featured in a solo exhibition entitled “Walter May: Object Lessons”. This exhibition is the first part of the One New Work series of three small focused exhibitions, curated by Nancy Tousley and mounted at Glenbow Museum throughout 2016. MORE>>
