Career Exploration Camps
High school students can investigate a crime scene, become a beautician or explore health care fields during hands-on career exploration camps this summer.

In the Cosmetology and Child Development Career Exploration Camp (June 13-16, 8 a.m. to noon), students will learn skills such as how to braid, straighten hair with a flat iron and use paraffin wax treatments. They will also explore COM’s Child Development Lab School and observe teachers in action.

The Public Service Career Exploration Camp (June 20-23, 8 a.m. to noon) will demonstrate how professionals serve each day. Students will discover crime scene investigation techniques, learn first aid and basic emergency medical technician skills and observe an introduction to firefighting.

The Nursing and Allied Health Career Exploration Camp (June 20-23, 8 a.m. to noon) will offer a peek into the fast-paced world of health care, including nursing, medical assistant and physical therapy aide careers. Students will watch how to insert an IV, learn CPR and first aid, and discover which branch of health care they may prefer.

The Industrial Trades Career Exploration Camp (June 20-23, 8 a.m. to noon) will dive into safety, mechanical maintenance and machining.

Participants may be incoming high school freshman to recently graduated seniors.

Tuition is $75 per camp. For details or to register, call 409-933-8462.

Kick Off Summer with Sports Camps

This summer students will dribble, pass and dunk their way to better skills in interactive soccer and basketball camps.

The soccer camp is open to 8 to 15-year olds and will focus on improving fundamentals and offensive and defensive skills. Campers will learn through games and practice in groups separated by ability. Coach Aaron Beck, of League City, will conduct this camp June 20-23 or July 25-28, 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $50 for in-district students and $55 for out-of-district students.

The basketball camp, for 5 to 15-year-olds, is in partnership with the National Basketball Academy, affiliated with the Houston Rockets. It is designed to improve the skills of any youth basketball player, emphasizing ball handling, shooting, passing and, most importantly, teamwork. The camp is Aug. 8-12, 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $60 for in-district students and $65 for out-of-district students.

New emergency management program

From hurricanes to homeland security threats, oil spills to outbreaks, the Texas Gulf Coast experiences a variety of incidents, disasters and hazards. College of the Mainland is launching a new program to train emergency management professionals to prepare for and respond to emergencies.

The COM Emergency Management Program will allow students to gain experience and earn certificates leading to a two-year Associate of Applied Science.

“I think it’s a great time to be [in the field]. People are realizing what emergency management is and recognizing it as a career, and more agencies are adding emergency managers,” said COM Emergency Management Program advisory panel co-chair Trameka Jewett, who is Regional Training and Exercise Coordinator for SouthEast Texas Regional Advisory Council.

Courses begin August 2016. For more information call 409-933-8267 or visit www.com.edu/academics/areas-of-study/emergency-management.

New advisor helps students pay for college

A new College of the Mainland staff member is helping students successfully apply for financial aid for any college.

“We want to get students excited about financial literacy,” said Dr. Lisa Gulesserian, financial aid advisor/financial literacy educator. “The burden of paying for college shrinks when students take advantage of financial aid options that don’t need to be paid back, such as work-study positions, grants and scholarships."

Through workshops, game shows and trivia nights, Gulesserian plans to expand the COM Financial Aid Office’s efforts to take the stress out of applying for financial aid. Gulesserian will serve as a resource for local high schools, community groups and college students on financial literacy, including information about student loans, credit card debt, budgeting and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

“We’re trying to address misconceptions. Some students think: ‘my parents make too much money and I won’t get aid.’ What students don’t realize is that [financial aid] depends on many things – for example, how many college students are in a family. You have nothing to lose by applying.”

For more information, call Gulesserian 409-933-8533.
