Join us in worship this Sunday as Rev. Troy Tatum continues a sermon series entitled, "Sent: An Extraordinary Mission for Ordinary People." Jesus sends us out to love and serve the world. We will explore together just what that means for our congregation and for our own lives.

Audio recordings of recent sermons are available to stream or download here.
Many of you are aware of our nursery growth over the past year. We have celebrated with families as they welcomed children and have also experienced growth through new families actively worshiping with us each week. This is exciting and we are taking steps ensure that our youngest members are receiving the best possible care. You can help! We are looking for some new or gently used items for the nursery. If you have any of these items that you would like to donate, please contact Robin Blakemore.

ITEMS NEEDED
  • hinged infant/child doorway gate
  • Glider Rocker
  • Clorox Wipes
Thank you for helping us care for our children!
Surf's up July 11-15 2016! You won't want to miss this exciting week of Bible stories, games, drama, music and more each day from 9:00-12:00! A huge thank you to all of the volunteers who made Children's Ministry a success this year. You share your light with so that our kids will know of God's love. Please stop by the church office and pick up a candle we made just for you!
Our youth mission team leaves for Kentucky Saturday May 28. We return Friday, June 3. Please be in prayer for us as we serve the people of Lee County, Kentucky in home repair ministry. We can't wait to share stories when we return.

Many thanks to the mystery donor who so generously purchased patio furniture for us to enjoy.  We now have new tables with umbrellas and chairs. Our Adventure Nook teachers and students, in particular, have enjoyed their lunchtimes eating "al fresco."   And we would like to extend an invitation to our members and friends to enjoy them also. Once again, a huge "thank you" to our mystery donor for your thoughtfulness and generosity.  Please know that we will make very good use of them!
The office will be closed on Monday, May 30 in observance of Memorial Day.

OFFICE HOURS

The church office is open 9 AM to 4 PM, Monday through Thursday.  The office will be closed on Fridays.  If you need to reach a pastor while the office is closed, please dial 205-295-6708 to reach the minister on call.

NATIONAL SACRED HARP
SINGING CONVENTION
JUNE 16, 17, 18, 2016
Sacred Harp Singers have only one "National Convention".  The thirty-seventh annual convention will be held at our church on the above dates.  This will be the ninth time to be at First Christian Church

The members of First Christian Church have welcomed people from most of the states in the United States as well as residents from Canada, Ireland, England, Poland, Australia (and I probably missed some places) to our wonderful place of worship in June for the last eight years.  They come to participate in singing Sacred Harp music from shape note (fa so la mi) songs written recently and also some that are centuries old.  Singers will arrive starting around 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 16th this year - take a lunch break  - and return to sing until about 2:30 p.m.  This routine will continue on Friday and Saturday following.  There will be over 500 people over the three day period.

Some of you have provided indispensable help for us to accommodate a large crowd of visitors such as this, and I am personally so grateful for your help.  As a member of our church and as an officer of this convention I feel it is important for this to be an exciting experience for our guests. It is an overwhelming task without your participation.  Certain ones have helped making and serving refreshments, greeting visitors, making them feel good about being with us - and just being good ambassadors for our church and God; and that makes me so proud to be one of you in this church.

The Sacred Harp community is not that familiar to many of you (I was born into a family tradition of going
to singings all of my life) and it has a long tradition for a couple of centuries in this country with many places in the South having Annual Singings at courthouses, schools,  public buildings,  churches, and homes.   It is not affiliated with any particular Religious Denomination but many singings are held at churches of Primitive Baptist, Methodist, Episcopalian, Lutheran as many others.  Participants are members of various Christian denominations Jewish and others unaffiliated.    All seem to be SPIRITUAL and LOVE to join in singing to God.

With any basic knowledge of music, it is easy to discover the practice these singers are following so that with minimal effort you too can follow and participate.  Books are available,  singers customarily sit together by parts (bass, alto, treble and tenor) .  It is open, you may come - stay as long as you can - go and return - as you choose.

You are encouraged to let me know if you would like to help.  Some like to return in preparing and serving beverages and refreshments.  I would be most happy to have you join me in taking care of our guests.   Or just come and be mesmerized.
