NATIONAL SACRED HARP
SINGING CONVENTION
JUNE 16, 17, 18, 2016
Sacred Harp Singers have only one "National Convention". The thirty-seventh annual convention will be held at our church on the above dates. This will be the ninth time to be at First Christian Church
The members of First Christian Church have welcomed people from most of the states in the United States as well as residents from Canada, Ireland, England, Poland, Australia (and I probably missed some places) to our wonderful place of worship in June for the last eight years. They come to participate in singing Sacred Harp music from shape note (fa so la mi) songs written recently and also some that are centuries old. Singers will arrive starting around 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 16th this year - take a lunch break - and return to sing until about 2:30 p.m. This routine will continue on Friday and Saturday following. There will be over 500 people over the three day period.
Some of you have provided indispensable help for us to accommodate a large crowd of visitors such as this, and I am personally so grateful for your help. As a member of our church and as an officer of this convention I feel it is important for this to be an exciting experience for our guests. It is an overwhelming task without your participation. Certain ones have helped making and serving refreshments, greeting visitors, making them feel good about being with us - and just being good ambassadors for our church and God; and that makes me so proud to be one of you in this church.
The Sacred Harp community is not that familiar to many of you (I was born into a family tradition of going
to singings all of my life) and it has a long tradition for a couple of centuries in this country with many places in the South having Annual Singings at courthouses, schools, public buildings, churches, and homes. It is not affiliated with any particular Religious Denomination but many singings are held at churches of Primitive Baptist, Methodist, Episcopalian, Lutheran as many others. Participants are members of various Christian denominations Jewish and others unaffiliated. All seem to be SPIRITUAL and LOVE to join in singing to God.
With any basic knowledge of music, it is easy to discover the practice these singers are following so that with minimal effort you too can follow and participate. Books are available, singers customarily sit together by parts (bass, alto, treble and tenor) . It is open, you may come - stay as long as you can - go and return - as you choose.
You are encouraged to let me know if you would like to help. Some like to return in preparing and serving beverages and refreshments. I would be most happy to have you join me in taking care of our guests. Or just come and be mesmerized.
