President Terry Fulmer on Geriatric EDs: ‘Momentum Is Underway’

In a recent article on "Geriatrics and Emergency Medicine," Dr. Terry Fulmer, president of The John A. Hartford Foundation, discussed how new clinical models are improving health processes for older patients and leading to other innovations. Prior to 2007, the concept of Geriatric EDs was largely unknown. "Today," Dr. Fulmer says, "we believe there are over 100, and momentum is underway."

The article features Kevin Beise, MD, and Ula Hwang, MD, who are leading a JAHF grant project to help these and other EDs around the country use the best evidence available to improve care for older adults.  The project is a partnership with the West Health Institute of the Gary and Mary West Foundation, which recently announced exciting related news. When the Person in Person-Centered Care Is Your Mother

What happens when the person who needs person-centered care is your own mother? Program Officer Wally Patawaran shares his experiences and those of his siblings in caring for their mother, who has an untreatable neuro-degenerative disease. And he relates how those experiences underscore the importance of grants The John A. Hartford Foundation has made to the National Committee for Quality Assurance to promote person-centered care, including through their Case Management Accreditation program for long-term services and supports.
