A busy summer ahead for Mint Artists; Paint Detroit with Generosity fundraiserdeadline approaches
Thanks to Mint Artist Maddie Teece for the hand lettered signs!
Summer creative jobs starts
Mint connected with SER Metro and Grow Detroit's Young Talent for our first summer jobs program. This will allow us to hire up to four emerging artists for creative projects - including painting 25 pieces for our Paint Detroit with Generosity campaign.
Mint will work out of The Carr Center downtown and also is taking on a few mural and mosaic projects - including one or two with Mint vice president Hubert Massey, the famed muralist and fresco artist.
We still need funding for art supplies and other costs for this six week summer program. So please donate by Sunday, June 5 - and invite friends with means to give to donate too.
If you're on the Mint board or advisory board - or are considering joining one of those groups - please join us for a summer gathering June 22 at New Center Park in Detroit. (Sorry dogs are not allowed in this private park but we'll have take home treats for your pets.)
Meet Mint team member Hubert Massey
Mint Artists vice president Hubert Massey has been a crucial part of our nonprofit start up. He is a mural and fresco artist, with major projects planned for Cobo Hall and near Rosedale Park. In early May he worked with Mint education director Linda Buck to create linoleum cut prints with our teens.
His son Matthew Massey participated in 2015 learn and earn program, then known as TAP. Hubert Massey will work with our young people this summer on a mosaic project.
Creative contrasts Cold art fair and hot trip to Pewabic
About seven Mint Artists visited Pewabic on East Jefferson for an end-of-season celebration after surviving snowflakes, rain and very cool temperatures during the Palmer Park Art Fair. Thanks to Linda Buck, who works as a tour leader at Pewabic, for the behind the scenes tour.
If you want to invite Mint to your gallery or creative business in the fall or winter, please offer us a creative space by contacting Vickie Elmer.
TEEN SUCCESS
Mint alumni Ackeem Salmon pitched his own tent at the Palmer Park Art Fair, just a year after being in Mint's tent. This photographer also has a one-person exhibit at The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History starting Aug. 4 and continuing through late October. And he is a featured artist on ArtsyShark, an idea he pursued based on a suggestion by Mint staff.
