RCC seminar series to feature all women speakers

In possibly an Australian first, a computing seminar series will feature an all-female line-up of speakers.

Of the 14 speakers, 12 are confirmed for this year's RCC seminar series, including:
  • Dr Genevieve Bell, an anthropologist and Intel's only female fellow, the company's highest technical rank
  • Prof. Ewa Deelman, Research Director at the University of Southern California's Information Sciences Institute
  • Maxine Brown, Director of the Electronic Visualization Laboratory at the University of Illinois, Chicago.
Speakers' topics are still being discussed and will be added to the RCC seminars webpage once confirmed. Read more

ITnews features QBI's use of technology

ITnews published a story on 30 May about the Queensland Brain Institute's use of technology in dealing with the large amounts of data its researchers produce.

The article, titled 'Inside the tech supporting the bleeding edge of neuroscience', mentions QBI's potential use of cloud computing via QRIScloud, and UQ's MeDiCI (Metropolitan Data Caching Infrastructure) storage fabric, recently prototyped by RCC.

QBI Senior IT Manager Jake Carroll is quoted as saying: “As things develop we could move certain workloads that suit into the QRIScloud and use the services of the Research Computing Centre (RCC) as well to augment our capability. It really depends upon the workload and practicality of data movement compared to the locality of the data generating instrument.”

RCC Director to speak at QUESTnet

RCC Director Prof. David Abramson will present at the QUESTnet 2016 conference on storage fabric MeDiCI, UQ's Metropolitan Data Caching Infrastructure. His talk is on Thursday, 7 July, 12pm–12:30pm.

RCC collaborator Jake Carroll of QBI will also present at QUESTnet. His talk on Wednesday, 6 July, 11am–11:30am, is on UQ's OMERO data management system and titled, "Solving terascale imaging curation and processing challenges". OMERO (Open Microscopy Remote Objects) is a modern client-server software platform for visualising, managing, and annotating scientific image data.

QUESTnet is a conference covering the full spectrum of ICT used in higher education and its audience are technologists who work in that sector. This year's conference is being held on the Gold Coast, 5–8 July. Full program

More journals now require DOIs for data sets — make sure you're prepared

More and more journals are requesting that authors deposit research data sets that underpin their publications in an open data repository, such as UQ eSpace.

UQ researchers can put their data sets into UQ eSpace to satisfy journals’ data depositing requirements.

UQ eSpace can mint Digital Object Identifiers for the deposited data sets and then authors can provide the DOIs to the journal publisher.
