IN TOUCH WITH THE CEO

Are You Confused?
The phones at AUSTSWIM have been running hot over the past week with questions and queries from centres and individuals regarding the landscape of the aquatics industry.

AUSTSWIM is not a party to any of these moves or changes.  No AUSTSWIM Guidelines, Policies, Recognised Centres or Teacher Licenses have undergone any change.

There are good reasons why AUSTSWIM is regarded by the industry, education departments, government agencies and the community, as the mainstay of grassroots training and advocacy for the teaching of swimming and water safety.

We’ve been doing it for 38 years, we have 33,500 licensed and accredited teachers AND we’re not going anywhere.

AUSTSWIM’s focus remains on drowning prevention. We work closely with the diverse workforce involved with the teaching of swimming and water safety, and aqua activity, to develop, evaluate and implement strategies to keep people safe in and around water.

Truly World Class
In a world-first, AUSTSWIM was last year awarded ISO/IEC 17024 status. This international standard has been developed with the objective of achieving and promoting a globally accepted benchmark for organisations operating certification of persons.

The process involves stringent and ongoing independent audit and review by the Australian and New Zealand governing body for international standards known as JAS-ANZ.

The process is independent and rigorous – you can’t ‘buy’ the ISO/IEC 17024 accreditation!  This international standard identifies that the AUSTSWIM Licence is the globally accepted benchmark for the teaching of swimming and water safety.
Now that’s World Class...

Collaboration
AUSTSWIM continues its collaboration with peak industry organisations for improved outcomes in swimming and water safety education where knowledge, skill and understanding provide the cornerstone for safer aquatic participation.

AUSTSWIM has a genuine consultation process to ensure consideration of all policy and guideline options.   This practice leads to better outcomes and greater acceptance in the industry, particularly among stakeholders, teachers and consumers.   This is best practice that avoids creating cumulative or overlapping regulatory burdens.

AUSTSWIM Guidelines
Our Guidelines are devised by industry stakeholders in a consultative and transparent process and represent the collective opinion of the aquatics industry and a range of expert personnel across Australia.
Local government, education departments, teachers and consumers can be confident that AUSTSWIM trained and accredited educators are meeting the highest standards to foster safer aquatic participation.

Current guidelines can be found here; we will keep you informed of the next review dates in the next newsletter.

And the makeup of the AUSTSWIM Council is truly representative of the industry. Every state and territory has industry representation through its State Advisory Committee (SAC) and the Council includes members from
  • Australian Leisure Facilities Association (ALFA);
  • YMCA Australia;
  • Royal Life Saving Society Australia;
  • Swimming Australia;
  • Surf Life Saving Australia;
  • and Water Safety New Zealand (WSNZ).
