Welcome

Welcome to our second EIJ16 Newsletter; this is designed to highlight important information and draw your attention to some specific areas.  However we can’t possibly cover everything here, so please do explore eij.org.uk as there is a wealth of information. If you have any burning questions the FAQ is a useful first port of call.

This newsletter is aimed at Group Leaders and we hope that you can use this to update your young people on the exciting week we have planned for them.

Also, don’t forget to get involved with our Social Media activities and share these with parents and participants (as age permits).  We’re all counting down the days to when we can welcome you to the Jamboree, and we hope you’re as excited as we are.  So get involved at:

We urgently need your participant & leader information to allocate you to a Subcamp

Phase 2 of all bookings should have been completed at the end of April. Unfortunately we are still waiting for Groups to submit their Participant and Leader information.  Without this we are unable to allocate your Group to a Subcamp.  We are so eager to do this, and would like to introduce you properly to your Subcamp. So please, if you haven’t submitted Phase 2, do so as quickly as possible here

What do you need to do?
  • Complete Phase 2 – the deadline has passed
  • Make your final payments that are now overdue

Let your younger members experience Junior Jam

Did you know that your Beavers, Cubs, Rainbows and Brownies can experience the Essex International Jamboree?  How you may ask?  Simple, just join our Junior Jam.

Junior Jam is an exciting opportunity for younger members to experience the Jamboree, we’ve arranged a special day jammed packed with activities to explore and try.  Junior Jam Participants can take part in the Jamboree flash dance, challenging physical activities, drumming workshops, traditional Scouting & Guiding skills, opportunities to handle some amazing creatures, a huge range of arts and crafts, massive inflatables and much, much more.

Please pass on the Junior Jam information to Unit Leaders so that they don’t miss out on this amazing opportunity to take part in the Jamboree

What do you need to do?
  • Pass on the Junior Jam information
  • Get in touch if you have any questions about Junior Jam
  • Don’t let your younger members miss out

Did you know we have a ‘Good Camping Guide’?

We know that camping at the Essex International Jamboree is a little bit different to your normal camps, so we’ve put together a Good Camping Guide.  Full of hints and tips, together with some safety advice, this fantastic guide will help you with your planning.

A downloadable version is also available from the website.

What do you need to do?
  • Check out the Good Camping Guide
  • Familiarise yourself with the guidelines
  • Adjust your plans and equipment if required

Don't forget your REN or NAN form

You can find them on your online booking at https://bookings.eij.org.uk/ by clicking on the blue "View Instructions" button in the Phase 2 section.

A copy of this needs to be forwarded to your relevant commissioner so they can approve your attendance by adding their name and date to the bottom of the form.

There's no need for risk assessments for the Essex International Jamboree, these are being prepared and provided for you.

Please return a copy of your completed form with commissioners approval to us at forms@eij.org.uk

What do you need to do?

Don’t yawn, this is important… it’s the Jamboree Policies

As members of both The Scout Association and Girlguiding UK, it is imperative that we adhere to policies; therefore please make sure you are up to date with the current association polices, in particular Scouting’s Young People First and Girlguiding’s A Safe Space together with our additional EIJ Policies

What do you need to do?

We are all responsible for maintaining a high level of hygiene at our Jamboree

Sleeping and living in close proximity to each other can cause the fast spread of illness, so it’s of utmost importance that we all concentrate on maintaining a high level of Health and Hygiene.  We all want to have fun at the jamboree, so let’s help avoid illness.

Please ensure that on your Unit Site, your participants are able to keep clean.  You need to have bowls for hand washing available; and you’re advised to encourage them to brush their teeth on site (rather than in the toilets).  It sounds obvious, but it’s so easily forgotten.

What do you need to do?
  • Bring washing bowls, soap and antibacterial wash
  • If possible, bring a wash tent
  • Remind your participants on Health and Hygiene
  • Check out the Good Camping Guide for more advice, hints & tips

So, what should our Scouts and Guides bring?

For many Guides and Scouts, this will be their first ever jamboree, so they may not know what to expect.  So please do share the website information with your parents and participants. In addition to your usual kit list, there are three themed events the Programme Team would like to make everyone aware of so they can plan their costumes or how they will dress up:
  • UV (ultraviolet) and Neon Night
  • Super Heroes Night
  • Carnival on our last night on Friday – dress to impress to celebrate our amazing week
What do you need to do?
Add the items listed below to your standard kit list:
  • Costumes, clothes and accessories for UV (ultraviolet) and Neon Night
  • Costumes, clothes and accessories for Super Heroes Night
  • Costumes, clothes and accessories for our last night of Carnival Celebration

Let’s shout from the rooftops

It will be an amazing experience for our young people, and we will have visitors from all over the globe coming to take part in our Jamboree.  So we want to spread the word and tell as many people about it as possible.   But to do this we’d also like to showcase some stories from you.  Do you have a special story to share?  Have you been fundraising?  Is this your first or twenty-first jamboree?  Let us know your story by emailing press@eij.org.uk.
