Pastoral letter: Jean Smiset

Dear ones in Christ:

Today I share an update on Jean Smiset, long term member of St. Catherine’s, who is currently residing at Elite Care Oakfield Estates in Milwaukie. This is a lovely facility, and Jean enjoys a beautiful room furnished with the best of the art, furniture, photos and mementoes she has always enjoyed.

At this point, however, Jean is very frail. I visited with her on Thursday, bringing her a dozen roses from her St. Catherine’s family. Sadly, I found that she was very confused and no longer recognizes me. She is unable to communicate much in the way of personal needs or preferences, is sleeping most of the time, and is no longer eating much.

As Jean moves into this last phase of what has been a long, full and joyful life, I ask for your faithful prayers. Pray that the light and comfort of God surround her to lower any distress or anxiety. Pray for the simple things, like ease and comfort. Above all, hold her in your hearts with love and gratitude for her life, and for the relationships she nurtured at St. Catherine’s over the course of the many years she lived in her beloved Manzanita.

And for those of you who have never met her, pray for a woman whose life was always filled with vitality, and always ready for adventure and travel. Take a look at the statue of the little boy reading that we have at the entrance of the church. This was a gift from jean and from her family, and sweet image to hold in our hearts as we remember Jean today.

Faithfully, Patricia+
