Whitley Bridge – Illegal Left Turn
Extra signs & cameras have now been installed on the Whitley Bridge and some people are taking notice of them. However after visiting for 10 minutes last Sunday afternoon to take photos, we saw 3 cars make an illegal turn.

Roger has asked what will happen to those caught on camera? We’re awaiting a response.

Rubbish on Abbey Road
A few weeks ago Roger received an email from a resident on the subject of Rubbish on Abbey Road. Here’s a snippet from it:
I write to you in the hope something can be done jointly to address the amount of rubbish on Abbey Road- in particular near to the Academy and on the 2 footpaths and pavements leading away from the school. This is an ongoing issue and from time to time I see council litter pickers in the area but not for a while now. The rubbish is just awful.

Roger contacted the Vice Principal of Whitley Academy with respect to this subject who stated that litter is a topic in tutor time and assemblies. His latest email stated this:
  • First week of June:  litter assemblies for all year groups
  • From this week:  detention litter pick (weekly)
  • We have signed up to the KEEP BRITAIN TIDY programme for schools
  • Posters going up in school (last week of May)
  • Website blurb for parents/students going up this week
  • Caretakers aware of and have changed route to include more time for keeping gates tidy
Out of Control Dogs in Cheylesmore
Last week a resident informed us that whilst out walking his family had been surrounded by two barking & menacing dogs. Eventually a local resident emerged to call the dogs in. When asked why the dogs were unattended in a public place, the owner started using abusive language.

Our resident reported the incident to the Police using the 101 number and was told that nothing could be done as the dogs didn’t harm anyone.

We put them in touch with the Neighbourhood Enforcement Officers via their website

A few days late the Neighbourhood Enforcement Officers visited our residents & said they would speak to the owners of the dogs and advise them to be more careful in future.

Road Signs Defaced
As a result of the demonstrations last weekend, road signs around the city were defaced. Roger noted & reported to Highways the graffiti on the sign as you leave the Whitley Bridge.

Thankfully prompt action was taken to clean up the sign.

Should you notice any such graffiti please let us know or click here

Save Our Footpaths

Our resident Hazel Hill intends to apply for a Modification Order to have the footpaths around and across the common designated as “Rights of Way” as having been used and enjoyed by the public for a continuous period of 20 years.

In order to achieve this she will have to provide evidence including signed statements from persons who have used the footpaths over all or some of that time.

We fully support this campaign. If you can help Hazel then please click here for more details.

White ‘H Bars’ - Access Protection Markings
Residents frequently ask if they can have white ‘H bars’ painted at their drop kerb to stop people from parking.
Reply received from Sara-Louise Allman, Traffic & Network Management
Unfortunately we only install Access Protection Markings (APM’s) where a person living at the property has a disabled blue badge, if they are within a marked limited waiting bay or if they are commercial premises (who have to pay).
We have a very small budget for these types of works and they are funded from the same pot as disabled parking bays. We have already utilised all of our funding for this financial year and we are currently still receiving requests for more.
As you can see this funding is very quickly used up, hence the reason we only consider the introduction of APM’s with the above criteria being met.
Unfortunately, we can’t accept payment from residents as it comes under social exclusion – one person can get it, but another can’t if they don’t have spare money!

Fenside Avenue Stream Clearance
A resident contacted us a few weeks ago about the poor state of part of the stream that crossed Fenside Avenue.
Roger received 2 emails from Scott at Whitefriars Housing about the subject
Written 23rd May
I have visited the site with our internal contractors Greenworks, who will be doing a clearance of the brook of all wood. There are also issues with 3 trees in the immediate vicinity, which I am looking at with our contractors tomorrow.
Written 25th May
I conducted a site visit with Beechwood yesterday and the works we would like to complete are as follows:
  • Large willow by the bridge at Fenside to be re-pollarded at around 7m
  • Damaged willow by the brook towards the A45 to have the remaining large section removed (This tree will re-sprout at a lower level)
  • Small hawthorn tree opposite to be removed.
I would imagine we will look to have this work completed within the next 3-4 weeks.

A45/A46 Tollbar Improvement Scheme Road Closure:
From Alan Jones, Galliford Try
I am writing to advise you of overnight road closures for the A45/A46 Tollbar Improvement scheme.

Ant Problem
A resident has asked if the Pest Control department could recommend something to combat their ant problem.
Reply from Julie Gallagher, Pest Control / Animal Welfare Officer, Environmental Services
Unfortunately we are not allowed to recommend a product.
All I can say is whatever you buy from the hardware store always read the label and use the product exactly as the instructions recommends.

The Anti-Scam Charity “Think Jessica” Launches ‘Scam Trap’ Campaign
The campaign is being run in partnership with the National Trading Standards Scam Team and supported locally by Coventry Trading Standards. Think Jessica is a national charity that works towards protecting elderly and vulnerable people from postal and telephone scams.

Those living alone, not having the internet or any other way of hearing about scams or how to report them are most likely to be victims and are the preferred targets of scammers.

Those who respond to calls and postal scams end up with their details put on what criminals call 'suckers lists' which are sold on to other scammers all over the world. This can result in victims potentially receiving over 100 scam letters a day and being plagued by international phone calls.
