Road from Marystowe by Chris Beighton

Chillaton and Hogstor Mine

Andrew Burch has been working with the Devon and Cornwall Mine Exploration Group to take a look inside the old mine workings on his land and nearby. They have already made some preliminary explorations and apparently the adits are in pretty good condition. Once their explorations are complete, we'll do a larger piece for the website. Although the mines were used to mine manganese and ochre, the photo is of olivenite, also found in the mine.
In the meantime they are very keen to speak to anyone who knows anything about the mines, either about the workings, or about the people who worked there. It is suspected that the ochre pit was last mined in the 1950s.
Please use the contact form on the website (or reply to this newsletter) to get in touch.

Wot no roadworks?

If you live in the village you'll have seen the signs announcing resurfacing work after the recent repairs were carried out.
You may also have noticed that the work did not take place as planned, and the signs have mostly now been blown away. We believe that this is an issue with the contractors, but don't know at this time when the works will take place.

Road Closure - Sydenham Bridge to Splatt Mill Bridge

DCC have given us notice that they intend to close the road from Sydenham to Splatt from Wednesday 25th May to Thursday 26th May. The official diversion is "TRALEE, PERRY SPEARS, CORYTON BRIDGE, ST MARYS CHURCH, SPLATT MILL, AND VICE VERSA".
Experience of the last road closure and the vehicular disruption that took place when vehicles all tried to use the Marystow road at the same time suggests that unless you have a really narrow vehicle you would be better off avoiding the area altogether if possible.

Tavistock Wheelers (and Tiernan-Locke) in Chillaton

On Sunday 22nd May, Tavistock Wheelers Cycle Club used the hill from Chillaton up towards Tavistock as part of their cycle road race event. This was a two part event with a hill climb in the morning, followed by the road race around Brentor in the afternoon. The race marked a step in the return of former Sky rider Jonathan Tiernan-Locke, who came second overall in the race as he continues to try to regain his 'elite' status. He didn't win the hill climb though. That title was taken by Huw Richards, of Tavistock Wheelers, who reached the lay-by in 3 minutes and 35 seconds. The club apologises for any early morning disturbance made by the congregating riders to any Chillaton residents.

On SUNDAY 17th July, we are planning a fun-filled day of activities, food, drink and a chance to catch up with friends and neighbours!

Why not join us for the 'Re-start'  of the Chillaton Fun Run* starting at 11.30am - all ages and abilities are welcome - you can even bring your dogs....

Then from 1pm at Haye Park Field, near Green Cross, there will be an afternoon of good food with a B-B-Q, good friends and good times - just bring your own drinks!!

Or, you can contact Bridget for more information or with offers of help.

Fun Run will be £3.00 per adult / £1.50 per child and the B-B-Q Afternoon will be approx. £ 4  per person (costs are estimated at this time).

Did you know that you can have your newspaper delivered to Chillaton Garage, for you to collect every day?

We have a rota of village residents who each collect the papers from the shop at Lifton and usually get them to the Garage by about 8.30am [a bit later at the weekends].
Each volunteer has a regular day when they collect the papers and we have back up arrangements in place for when people are on holiday, etc.  We expect at least one of our volunteers to be moving soon and so are looking for replacements.

If you are interested in having your papers delivered to Chillaton, or in joining our volunteer collectors, please call Howard on 860378.
