With the NCAA's ban on holding pre-determined events in South Carolina  lifted, officials from the state are exploring the possibility of hosting events in the coming years. Columbia Regional Sports Council Executive Director Powers, who attended the DII Spring Sports Festival, sees great opportunity in small college tourneys: "Men’s basketball generates the largest impact and is on live national TV. But it also takes the most work, and there are many other events out there. Denver is an NFL city and for a city like that to think enough of the Division II spring sports festival to host it says a lot about the smaller divisions." Charleston Area Sports Commission Executive Director Cartland concurs: "“There are Division II and III events with nobody even bidding for them. We were very surprised at the opportunities that are out there, even at the Division II and III levels, and we certainly could be in position to do that.” - link
Cal State LA made headlines this weekend by hiring Langston (NAIA) WBB HC Miller to the same position. A move by the same AD at both schools, Mike Garrett, who now leads the Golden Eagles. Miller is best known for her famed playing career that featured two national titles at USC (DI), two NCAA Tournament MVPs and a gold medal at the 1984 Olympics, all of which led to her enshrinement in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. Miller, who has also served as HC at USC, a TV analyst, and HC/GM of the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury, is excited about the opportunity: "Graduating and developing women of inspiration and substance is my goal. Cal State LA is the perfect place for that mission." - link
More on Cal State LA's hiring of Miller. The former All-American is happy to be back in her native LA and closer to family. She also knows that she has her work cut out for her with a program that has gone 21-32 over the past two seasons: "Obviously we’re going to have to change the culture, the mindset, and raise the bar." AD Garrett believes she will do that an more: "I’ve known Cheryl as a player, coach and general manager for more than 20 years. She is a world-class talent. I came to Cal State LA to win national championships, and Cheryl has done just that. She knows how to get us to where we intend to go." - link
Trevecca Nazarene has named Truett-McConnell (NAIA) WBB HC Hibdon to the same position. Hibdon made great strides at TMC during his one year there and he won consecutive state titles the last two years he was at Blackman HS in Murfreesboro, TN. AD Elliott on his new HC: "Chad's professional credentials and experiences of success are obvious. But it is the intangible qualities that set him apart. Mission fit, leadership, the partnership he shares with his wife, his core values of 'give, grow, love, win' and his ideas of building a championship culture. These are the things that drew us to ultimately choose him from a very capable pool of candidates." - link
