Pillar eats turf

Games played May 22, 2016

Dodgers CF Joc Pederson singled twice and was intentionally walked in a 9-5 win over the Padres. The 17th-inning walk loaded the bases for Yasiel Puig, who stroked a two-run single that proved the game-winner. In the 5th inning, Pederson knocked out the home-plate umpire for the day with a bunt foul to the groin.

Oakland 3B Danny Valencia went hitless in a 5-4 loss to the Yankees.

Detroit 2B Ian Kinsler singled and made a sweet, backhanded snare in a 9-4 win over the Rays.

Back in the lineup after missing five of six games with injuries, Milwaukee LF Ryan Braun singled and stole second base in a 3-1 loss to the Mets. He also made a rare misplay in left, letting a bloop hit by Yoenis Cespedes get by him for a double. After the game, Braun said his back felt fine.

After failing to reach base in five straight games, Toronto CF Kevin Pillar broke out of his slump with a single and a double in a 3-1 win over Minnesota. Pillar also added to his highlight-reel outfield play with an inning-ending, run-saving catch that set a new bar for turf-diving. Here's what Blue Jays starter Marcus Stroman said about Pillar and the catch after the game: "I might get him a pair of Jordans or something. Yeah, he's always saving our [rear ends]. He's helping all of us out there each and every day, and we're just thankful to have him out there. Any ball that's remotely close to him he usually comes down with, so that's pretty reassuring, having someone like that out there behind you."

Houston reliever Scott Feldman's did not play.
