ASI Chain of Custody Standard - Consultation Plan

Interested in responsible sourcing, supply chain due diligence or making sustainability claims about aluminium?  Then the ASI Chain of Custody Standard will be relevant to you.

After focusing on building ASI's governance model in the lead up to the ASI AGM in April, and then convening the new ASI Standards Committee, ASI is now ramping up its standards development work with members.

A critical part of the ASI certification program will be the ASI Chain of Custody (CoC) Standard. Most sustainability standards use some type of CoC Standard to provide assurance for claims about responsible production and/or sourcing through the value chain.

Earlier work took place on the ASI CoC Standard during 2014.  Draft 1 of the CoC Standard was developed under IUCN with the ASI Standards Setting Group (SSG), with a public consultation period open from July to September 2014. Eight sets of comments on the draft were received and published on the ASI website. Following discussion of received comments, a Draft 2 of the CoC Standard was then made available on the ASI website in January 2015. While the draft has been publicly available since that time, a formal comment process was not convened.

ASI's CoC Standard will now be further developed and finalised over the next 18 months. A Public Summary and Consultation Plan has been agreed by the ASI Standards Committee and is available for public comment. It sets out an additional two public comment periods on drafts 3 and 4 of the Standard in 2016 and 2017, followed by pilot testing in Q3 2017. Member and public webinars will be convened during the comment periods.

Who are ASI Members?

ASI's membership reached 31 organisations this month.  ASI's membership classes consist of upstream companies ('Production and Transformation'), downstream users of aluminium ('Industrial Users' and 'Downstream Supporters'), NGOs and non-profit public good organisations ('Civil Society'), Associations, and General Supporters.  See a list of current members.

Did you know that ASI membership costs as little as USD100 to a maximum of USD25,000 per year, depending on the type and scale of your organisation?  Your membership will directly contribute resources and expertise to the development of ASI's certification program during 2016-17.

ASI MEMBERSHIP NEWS

European Aluminium joins ASI

ASI is delighted to announce that European Aluminium (EA) has joined as an Associations member.

European Aluminium was founded in 1981 and is based in Brussels.  It actively engages with decision makers and the wider stakeholder community to promote the outstanding properties of aluminium, secure growth and optimise the contribution aluminium can make to meeting Europe’s sustainability challenges. EA's 75 members include primary aluminium producers; downstream manufacturers of extruded, rolled and cast aluminium; producers of recycled aluminium and national aluminium associations, representing more than 600 plants in 30 European countries.

“Today’s industrial commitment to sustainability can only be credible if there is a tangible plan with vision, objectives and examples. With the Sustainability Roadmap towards 2025, the aluminium industry in Europe is demonstrating that sustainability is engrained in its values and vision of the world. For European Aluminium, joining the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative is a natural complement to the work our members do to achieve the voluntary targets of the Roadmap by 2025. Joining ASI as an associations member will trigger synergies and reinforce our engagement with key stakeholders,” said Gerd Götz, Director General of European Aluminium.
