In Pakistan, entry examinations for higher education are widespread. But according to Faisal Bari, CDPR Fellow and Senior Researcher at the Institute of Development and Economic Alternatives (IDEAS), they have significant detriments: the pressure of students' entire academic careers are based on one day, teachers focus their energy on the exam instead of practical writing skills, students lose money to extra tutoring and cheating and bribery are often done to pass. While understanding the need for objective data to assess students, Bari calls for more debate on how to design a system that rewards genuine learning and minimizes corruption.
