Two new openings posted in D1.jobs below from NC State, plus additional new opportunities from New Hampshire & Peak Sports MGMT.
North Texas AD Villarreal announces he'll step away from the Mean Green department on June 20 after 15 years, has less than two years left on his current deal, which will be bought out. "I am satisfied with what we accomplished. What I will remember the most is that we changed the culture of the program...We have facilities like other schools and have tailgating. When we got here in 2001, the program was pretty much left for dead. We had coaches going out and playing in public parks and intramural fields. We are in a different place right now." Prez Smatresk plans to name an Interim AD in the near future & get moving with a national search. - link
Latest swirl around the Big 12: Billionaire Texas donor McCombs on the potential of adding Houston, "I think we need to add two teams to the Big 12 and should have done it two years ago. The first one should be the University of Houston then it would be your choice of several others." On the potential of Texas going independent, "I don’t see that happening. There are a lot of advantages being in a league. That’s where we have always been. I think that will stay that way." (link); Austin American-Statesman columnist Davis got some folks riled up with this tweet, "I don't know if Houston is ultimately good/bad. But this idea the Big 12 'owns' the Houston TV market is ill-informed. It's a SEC/UH town." (link); Fox 26 responds to Davis with a chart of the Top 20 highest rated college FB TV match-ups in Houston last season, 60% involved SEC teams, 20% including Houston & 20% featured a Big 12 member (link).
The NCAA released an eight-page white paper on FLSA minimum wage developments with a key focus on how to determine the exempt status of trainers & coaches. Title is irrelevant. Here's what is important, "the principal, main, major or  most important duty that the employee performs." A staffer's "primary" responsibility is quantitative, not qualitative." A number of exemptions are also reviewed, as well as best practices for non-exempt employees who must now be paid overtime rates. Lots more. - link
San Jose Mercury News' Wilner on some big news coming today on the West Coast that's been on the rumor mill for a bit, "Look for #UCLA apparel announcement Tues. Expecting $225M (or more) over 15-18 yrs. Biggest deal in country." Who might be the apparel partner for the Bruins? "...haven't confirmed but would bet @UnderArmour." - link, link
Wilner also penned on yesterday's meeting agenda involving all Pac-12 CEOs & Commish Scott with a specific look at the Pac-12 Networks situation. "Oh, and let me add this: The presidents and chancellors aren’t exactly clamoring for an equity sale. The Pac12Nets weren’t pitched to the ivory towers as a major money-making endeavor, but rather as a non-money loser that would give the conference 100% ownership of a media company during a time of rising valuations for media companies. For the time being, the CEOs are quite content." - link
New Winthrop AD Halpin was in Rock Hill yesterday for his official introductory presser. Wants to meet with as many people as possible once he arrives in mid-July in order to build his knowledge base & a better perspective of the sequencing of things that need to be done, "It’s the things they’re gonna say that provide the strategic direction for the next 20 years of Winthrop athletics." Search committee head Prieto says his group got an immediate vibe from Halpin on his leadership plan. Interestingly, Halpin & WU Prez Mahony will co-teach a class together during the Fall semester. - link (includes presser videos)
A Toledo Blade editorial outlines one challenge for new Bowling Green AD Moosbrugger, raising money to enhance the Falcons FB & Hockey digs. "As he said at his introductory news conference at Bowling Green, 'cash is king, because it can get things done.' It can indeed. Private donors mostly funded the school’s sparkling Stroh Center, the multipurpose arena that opened in 2011. Now it’s time to give that same shine to the football and hockey facilities. For Mr. Moosbrugger, that means it’s time to polish his fund-raising skills." - link
With the departure of Walker Jones back to Under Armour, CAA has hired Kansas State Assoc. AD Dowdle to work alongside the likes of Jimmy Sexton, Trace Armstrong & others in continuing to build the agency's portfolio. Dowdle heads back to his hometown of Memphis, "I’m in a very fortunate spot to work with CAA. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity." Wildcats FB HC Snyder says Dowdle will be missed. - link
Syracuse's SB Nation outlet reviews "What Syracuse Needs From the Next Athletic Director." FB topics include helping new HC Babers achieve success, driving attendance back to the Carrier Dome & addressing some scheduling challenges. On the MBB front, the some day transition from HC Boeheim to HC-in-waiting Hopkins is on the radar. Olympic sport success means a number of HCs may get approached for other gigs in the near future. Long-term planning & positioning also mentioned as a key item. - link
The latest selection from HBR, "Growing Up Wealthy Makes Leaders More Narcissistic." Researchers looked at a group of U.S. Army soldiers who graduated from West Point & are currently serving in leadership roles with the military. After gathering family incomes from the trio at the time the group applied to college, researchers issued a survey measuring the group's levels of narcissism & their subordinates in the army were asked to rate their leaders on performance levels, willingness to assist, and on three types of behaviors: relational, task & change-related. Thesis: "Higher levels of parental income are directly correlated to greater levels of narcissism in adults, and this higher level of narcissism translates to lesser interest in relational, task and change-oriented behaviors. Relational behaviors involve showing concern for others, task behaviors include organizing individuals' roles in a group task and change-related behaviors are associated with a willingness to promote innovative and unique thinking." - link

ESPN is reporting Vanderbilt AD Williams will hire Indiana Fever HC White as the new leader of the Commodores program. And, according to the Nashville Tennessean, White will be joined by ESPN analyst & former Florida & Purdue HC Peck as Assoc. HC. Peck was White's HC in West Lafayette during her playing days. Peck can get started immediately, while White will wait until the WNBA season is complete. - link
One incoming Senior Assoc. AD is Eileen Daley at San Jose State as she'll return to the Spartans & oversee academics & student services. Daley previously served as Asst. AD & lead academic counselor & was a key figure in SJSU working with the NCAA on major improvements to its APR situation. Daley replaces Liz Jarnigan who left after eight years for a similar role at Air Force. - link
One outgoing Senior Assoc. AD is Banks Floodman at Kansas as he's set to join Kansas City real estate firm Sunflower Development Group. For the past three years Floodman has led the Williams Fund, which has included the build & improvement of a number of facilities. "It was not an easy decision to leave KU, and it’s still not easy. It’s the only thing I know, and I’m very passionate about it and always will be." Jayhawks AD Zenger indicates he wants to have a new hire in place by August 1, if not sooner. - link
The 'Squad' effort at Oregon State continues to generate press & this time it's a lengthy review by SBJ's Smith. Beavers Deputy AD for External Operations Lassiter: "A lot of our purchasing is done on a subscription basis and then the customer decides how and when to use that content or service. It’s how we live our lives. Why doesn’t that apply to live sports?" Experience's Pass technology is a key piece of the execution, as is the ability for young alums to be able to sit together ("Squadron"). Experience CEO Foster says a half dozen other schools & some pro orgs reached out soon after OSU's move. More. - link
Air Force AD Knowlton shares what's happening in his department. Hockey student-athlete Higgins will compete at the 2016 Olympic games in smallbore men's prone rifle. Eight student-athletes earned All-America status this spring, bringing the yearly total to 33 for the Academy. Men's T&F completed the Mountain West Conference Triple Crown, while men's lacrosse went undefeated in the Southern Conference & claimed both the regular season & tourney titles. All efforts earned Air Force a 44th place ranking in the Learfield Director's Cup standings, good for best in the MWC and among the three service academies. Pleased with FB Spring Game event and the hire of new VB HC Swindle, more. - link
More moves: Longtime UVA Men's Lax HC Starsia will not return to Charlottesville next season. In 24 years, led the Cavs to four NCAA titles and a 274-103 mark, but failed to make the ACC Tourney the last two seasons and finished 7-8 this year. (link); After seven years in Annapolis, Navy Men's Soccer HC Brandt leaves to become the HC for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds (link); Miami (FL) parts ways with Men's Tennis HC Rincon after 12 years (link).

The winds have shifted just a bit on Houston FB HC Herman's views about his team's chances of reaching the 4-team college FB Playoff. After last year openly admitting he tells recruits that the AAC prevents UH from competing for a national title, last year's 13-1 record & win over Florida State in the Peach Bowl, plus 2015's season opener vs Oklahoma, have Herman allowing himself to at least consider the possibility. Nonetheless, he's not holding his breath, even if UH can beat OU and finish unbeaten: “Hypothetically, in a situation [like that] ...if that team does not get invited to the four-team Playoff then the system is broken. Now, how that applies to us, I don’t know. But in that scenario, if that team did not get in, I think we would need to reevaluate the system." - link
Brief video interview with CBS Sports' Dodd about how USC FB HC Helton is attempting to change the 'Hollywood' culture of the program. Dodd isn't ready to anoint the career assistant (who has eight games as an interim HC & two as permanent HC at the end of last year) as the savior just yet, but notes that "they're definitely hitting more" in practice and that "we're getting back to 'Student Body Right' and whoever loses has to run laps." - link
An open records request at Stony Brook has turned up the Seawolves agreements with Parker Executive Search on the search process that led to the hire of MBB HC Boals. Sticker price was $64,500 plus expenses. Also part of the document dump is the new contract for Boals that pays him $365K with a number of competitive & academic incentives. - link
