New partnership to boost renewable energy sector in Bristol
Regen SW and Engine Shed have announced a new partnership to support the renewable sector in Bristol. The collaboration will allow Regen SW member companies free access to the Engine Shed Business Lounge

The agreement aims to support the rapid development of the low carbon sector in Bristol. It will provide Regen SW members with a meeting space to facilitate collaboration and networking with academics, high-tech, creative and low carbon entrepreneurs and innovators, business leaders, policy makers and professionals.

Merlin Hyman, Chief Executive of Regen SW, says: “With over 13,000 jobs in renewable energy and £3 billion invested in projects, the south west is a leader in the transition to a clean energy system. The new partnership with the Engine Shed will enable member companies to build on that success through collaboration and networking with fellow entrepreneurs and innovators, business leaders, academics and professionals.”

Current Exhibition - ‘The Story of Scrap’ with Children's Scrapstore. 3 May - 28 June 2016.

‘The Story of Scrap’ is an adventurous collaboration between students at Patchway Community College, local charity Children’s Scrapstore, Cameron Balloons, and Coniston Primary School in Patchway.

Taking inspiration from Brandon Stanton’s renowned  ‘Humans of New York’ collection, it uses images to illustrate how Children’s Scrapstore reuses manufacturing waste, for a new lease of life as children’s play resources, achieving environmental and social benefits and saving businesses disposal costs. The project exhibits the circular economy of scrap, and the journey of materials from their intended use, eventually into the Scrapstore where they are sent out to PlayPods in school playgrounds/made available to child minders, playgroups and anyone who works with children and adults in a therapeutic setting.

Engine Shed and Children's Scrapstore will be running an adult play session in Platform 14 on 15 June from 12 - 1 pm - bring your own lunch and come and make something fun out of scrap donated by local businesses and get to know your fellow Engine Shed users. If you'd like to come along, drop Lorraine an email.

West of England LEP

Through the LEP’s Annual Employer Skills Survey, the views of employers across the West of England are being sought on recruitment experiences, skills gaps and more to influence the area’s future skills strategy.

Aligned to our vision to develop a local workforce with the right skills to meet the current and future needs of the local economy, the LEP is committed to understanding and tackling skills gaps, talent shortages and other skills priorities. With the spotlight on education and training at all levels, the information you provide will be invaluable in informing the future local skills landscape, meeting your business and sector’s needs as well as helping provide relevant, sustainable training opportunities for local people.

Last year, over 640 local businesses of all shapes and sizes contributed to this important research, leading directly to the publication of a suite of Local Sector Skills Statements which, right now, is helping partners improve the quality of careers advice, increase the take-up of apprenticeships and deliver ever more relevant and accessible education and training to meet the needs of our dynamic business community.

West of England LEP Director of Skills, Adam Powell said: “By bringing business and education closer together through this research, a greater shared understanding of local needs and demands will not only benefit employers, but individuals and the local economy as a whole. We simply can’t do this without the contributions of local businesses – their input and insights are invaluable and we’d very much like to hear their views.”

The UK’s first Smart Cities Index has named Bristol as the country’s leading smart city outside London and leader of the pack for digital innovation.

The report by global information and communications solutions company Huawei, compares and evaluates the 10 leading smart cities in the UK with the aim of celebrating best practice and identifying challenges which need to be overcome for cities to become smarter.

Bristol is identified as one of only two cities in the country named as a smart city Leader, the other being London. These two cities have set themselves apart from the others through their clarity, breadth and inclusiveness of their smart city visions and planning, and are leading the way in implementing significant projects at both the pilot and full-scale levels. The other eight cities have been identified as Contenders, Challengers and Followers.

Bristol is particularly strong in the digital innovation category, which evaluates the city’s strategy to develop and exploit digital technologies and services, scoring the top mark of 92 out of a possible 100 points. It also comes out top for stakeholder engagement, implementation of projects and delivery of the city’s digital strategy. Bristol’s overall score in the Smart Cities Index is 80.2, just behind London which scored 80.5.

Smart Cities is a term which is used to describe a city which uses technological innovation to deliver services in an economically viable and environmentally sustainable way. Smart cities are being built on an intelligent urban infrastructure of connected devices.
