PJC Youth Council Updates

Poder Juvenil Campesino (PJC) is a group of young men and women farmworkers who promote the well-being and dignity of all farmworkers, speak against child labor, and practice environmental sustainability through participation in educational and creative projects

March on Reynolds - Winston Salem, NC
On May 5th PJC Youth joined the Farm Labor Organization Committee (FLOC), AFL-CIO members and farmworker allies at the Reynolds American's annual shareholders meeting for the March on Reynolds event. The March on Reynolds is a call on the company to sign an agreement with FLOC guaranteeing freedom of association to all farmworker in their supply chain.  One PJC Youth Freddy had the opportunity to attend the shareholders meeting to talk about his experience of working in tobacco fields in North Carolina. Other PJC Youth joined allies in marching through Winston-Salem to increase awareness of farmworker rights and dignity.

Dream, Goals & Careers - May PJC Meeting
May's meeting focused on youth thinking and exploring their dreams and goals. PJC Youth first played a game of Career Charades to briefly introduce them to various career choices. Youth then learned more about their individual color personality and career choice recommendations. This meeting provided youth with a safe space to explore the unlimited opportunities available beyond manual labor.

Special Thank You to #NFAW2016 Participants!
During National Farmworker Awareness Week 2016 (#NFAW2016) NC FIELD highlighted various former farmworker youth across the nation. Participants shared their story, lessons they learned, and advice to other farmworker youth.

PJC President Jose, created a short video that was presented to the rest of the PJC Youth Council. The purpose of this video was to demonstrate to other farmworker youth that you can be anything you set your mind to me. Check out the video below!
