Soirée for Hands On Atlanta

ON SATURDAY, MAY 21ST, HANDS ON ATLANTA hosted its annual Soirée in celebration of the outstanding service of leading community volunteers while raising funds for Hands On Atlanta's year-round Impact Programming. See more

This year Hands On Atlanta honored Billiee Pendleton-Parker with the Holly Palmer Rhodes Volunteer of the Year Award. A Hands On Atlanta volunteer for nearly 25 years, Billiee's advice to her students is "Strive for significance and not success. Because success is finite and significance has a ripple effect that never ends."

Guests had a fantastic time dining, dancing and bidding on some amazing items and travel packages.  At one point during the live auction, Jay Bernath, Chair of Hands On Atlanta's Board of Directors, came to the stage with "Emilia," a second-grader from a local school, to share her story about how she and her classmates raised over $1000 for the Discovery program.  Click on the video below and hear Emilia's story.
"I think that if kids can give back to help the community we live in, then I know
grownups can too
."

COMMUNITY IMPACT

TUTOR FORCE FELLOWSHIP
High Impact Tutoring in Atlanta Public Schools

Earlier this year, Atlanta Public Schools (APS) partnered with Hands On Atlanta to help support APS' high impact tutoring initiative. Through this partnership, Hands On Atlanta brought 40 full-time tutors to eight APS schools from January 2016 through May 2016. These Tutor Force fellows provided daily literacy tutoring to nearly 900 3rd-5th graders who were at the greatest risk of not meeting their academic milestones.

The program consists of 45 minutes of daily tutoring for each student. The sessions begin with 15 minutes of learning concepts on the computer, followed by 15 minutes of one-on-one time with the tutor. The final part of the session is for individual work time to give the student a chance to apply the concepts that were learned during the session.  Hands On Atlanta will be helping APS with their summer academy and the Tutor Force Fellowship is expected to resume in the 2016-2017 school year.
SERVICE SPOTLIGHT

MERCEDES-BENZ USA
LEGO Build Competition

On February 18th, Mercedes-Benz and Hands On Atlanta came together for the first ever LEGO competition to help benefit The Discovery ProgramThe Pre-owned & Fleet Operations teams were each separated into two groups before competing against each other in this fun competition.

The goal of the activity was for one group to lead while the other group attempted to build structures out of LEGO play-sets while blindfolded. The employees of Mercedes-Benz USA were able to see how to effectively lead and communicate with others, especially when challenges are thrown into the mix.

At the end of the competition, all of the LEGO play-sets were donated to our Discovery Kids! Thank you to Mercedes-Benz USA and everyone who contributed to and participated in this workshop!
