chieftain’s chat

Hello from your new chieftain!

Since slipping that chieftain’s medal round my neck last month, it’s been all go.

A small group of us went up to KL for the Selangor St Andrew’s Society Highland Games and the concert the night before was the Red Hot Chilli Pipers. We have to get them back to Singapore because they were fabulous. The Society were wonderful hosts and we hope we can do more together this coming year.

Last weekend was the Chieftain’s Trophy in Bintan. Thankfully, there was no expectation of good golf, as I just had to present the prizes. Even with four lost balls and lots of holes in the double digits, I had a blast.

Planning has begun for our post-summer event, the return of Whisky Kiss and the ball, and then there are the regular events like golf, bridge, coffee mornings and ladies nights.

We will keep you updated on everything, of course. If you haven’t liked our Facebook page as yet, please do, because that’s the first place new events appear.

I’m off to enjoy the Scottish summer, even if it’s of the wet and windy variety, so see you in August!

Elaine

Have a last dance with Hazel

As dance convenor Hazel Halliday has guided us all through many a set, whether at the weekly Scottish Country Dance classes, those six ball practices or during the ball itself.

Hazel took over as dance convenor in December of 2000. She also did dancing as an ECA (extra curriculum activity) at her school and invited children of Society members to join in. And when she was chieftain in 2002 to 2003, the dance commitments continued. Hazel has devoted so much time and effort over the years to dancing that we have to give her a special mention as she heads back to Scotland this summer. We don’t know what we’ll do without her!

Tomorrow will be Hazel’s last night of teaching before she leaves, so if you’d like to see Hazel before she goes, head to Tanglin Trust School, Portsdown Road (small hall).

It costs $5 on the night; 7.30pm to 9.30pm and afterwards at the Col Bar.

Please use Gate C at the school in view of the ongoing building works there.

All welcome! No partner or experience necessary.

Last Thursday dancing until after the Summer break, when Joan Blake will take on dance coordinating role.

May lassies night is tonight!

If you haven’t got anything else on, head down to the Sofitel So Singapore, 35 Robinson Road from 7.00pm.

We aren’t on the rooftop because they have a private event, but then we are better off in the lobby if it’s going to rain!

Complimentary glass of Ruinart Champagne with the first drink purchased from 6pm until 9pm.

Then it's only $10 per glass all night!

Drop in coffee morning

Going forward, we are going to clink our coffee cups with the St David's and St Patrick's ladies. Let's join them for a blether... Thursday, 2nd June from 10.00am at The Providore, second floor of Mandarin Gallery on Orchard Road.

TOUR: In the footsteps of 1800s visitors to Singapore

In 1892 the Reverend Reith, the then minister at the Orchard Rd Presbyterian Church (aka the Scots Church) wrote “A Guidebook to Singapore” aimed at visitors with little time in Singapore, but who would want to see the highlights.

He was clearly as passionate about Singapore – where he worked for seven years – as he was about his native Scotland, as he gave lectures about both countries.

We have recreated one of his suggested routes for getting to know the island – except that we will travel by air conditioned bus rather than by rickshaw as they did in the 19th century!

We’ll start & finish at the National Library, which is currently holding an exhibition – entitled “From the Stacks” – of historical documents, including an original copy of Rev Reith’s handbook.

Along the way, we’ll see many sights – and sites – and make stops at the Scots Church, Clarke Quay, St Andrew’s Cathedral as well as walking from Raffles Place to the Padang.

We’ll see what still remains intact from that era, what still remains but is used for a very different purpose, and what has disappeared and why.

Saturday, June 11th, 10.00am until 1.00pm
Price: $50
Meeting Place: the National Library
