Dear Constituents and Supporters of the 78th District:
I’m writing to you today to give some updates on significant issues for our state. Recent proposals that enjoy wide public support include freezing property taxes and providing funding for higher education.
I supported legislation, House Bill 696, which would freeze property taxes. If enacted, this bill will provide a two-year freeze for non-home rule communities. Property taxes in Illinois continue to rise without an end in sight, but this bill would address this crippling issue for many homeowners. I also supported this measure to provide relief to Illinoisans who have consistently received an unfair deal from Springfield. House Bill 696 recently passed the House of Representatives and awaits consideration in the Senate.
Also, I’d like to update you about the state’s budget. While we are working to end the ongoing budget impasse, we have made progress on providing temporary funding to our state universities. Last month, I voted for Senate Bill 2059, which was signed into law, and will provide $600 million to public universities throughout the state. This measure will allow our state universities to remain open, but it only provides temporary relief.
Clearly, the fight doesn’t end here, and I will not stop fighting until we have better reforms to offer all Illinoisans. While these bills do tackle some of the large, crushing issue we face everyday, it simply isn’t enough.
Sincerely,
Camille Y. Lilly
State Representative, 78th District
