Carers Trust Cambridgeshire and Carers Trust Peterborough are contacting carers and former carers to spread the message that we are celebrating and honouring the valued commitment of dedicated family carers past, present and future during national Carers Week, 6-12 June.

Carers Week - Sharing the Caring event incorporating 'Pride in Our Carers Awards'

The theme of this year’s Carers Week is Caring Communities and many events will be held throughout the region for all carers of all ages, including young carers, organised by partners and professionals.

The highlight of the week will be the first ever Pride in Our Carers Awards ceremony held in partnership with Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust at C3 , Coldhams Lane, Cambridge as part of a day long Sharing the Caring Event.  Carers will be able to find out about some of the very practical help and support available to them in their local community with a host of lively and interactive stands and displays as well as hearing about how the Triangle of Care has been involving carers of people with Mental Health problems.

Dr Jane Hawking, author and former wife of Professor Stephen Hawking, will speak at the event.  Her book, Travelling to Infinity: My life with Stephen, became a box office hit when it was released as the film The Theory of Everything.  It portrays the struggles she faced as a carer for her young husband who was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease when he was 21, before he became a world leading theoretical physicist and cosmologist.

The winners of the first ever Pride In Our Carers Awards will be announced during the afternoon.  We have been very moved by the nominations which are a glowing testament to the countless unpaid carers who are making a difference to the lives of others by going the extra mile.

We very much hope that you can join us.  To book your place please go to http://bit.ly/1ZhhZi9 or email triangleofcare@cpft.nhs or call 01733 748386.

Carers Picnic - Saturday 11 June 2016

Another key date for your diary is Saturday 11 June when a picnic for families and carers and former carers of all ages will be held at Hinchingbrooke Country Park, Huntingdon, from 11am-2pm, come rain or shine.

Please bring a picnic, picnic blanket and join in an intergenerational day with families, carers and former carers from across the county.  A bouncy castle and fun games are planned by our staff.

Please let us know you'll be coming along by booking on Eventbrite.

Key Messages
  • Carers new national strategy survey open now - have your say
  • There’s evidence that the caring role is harmful and the intensity of caring is associated with self-reported ‘very bad’ health, depression and feelings of stress
  • There are 3.5 times more unpaid carers than paid NHS professionals – and the number is growing at a faster rate than the population.
